Tropical Storm Amanda kills at least 7 in El Salvador

At least seven people have died in El Salvador as Tropical Storm Amanda made landfall in Central America on Sunday. Drone and on-the-ground footage shows damage from flooding to the area known as La Malaga in the capital San Salvador. Writes the filmer: "The Tropical Storm Amanda that hit the Central American territory has left serious damage and death due to the floods and overflows of rivers in different points of El Salvador. "Workers of the mayor of San Salvador and inhabitants of La Malaga, in the capital city, clean the debris left by the overflow of the Acelhuate river, which in the early hours of Sunday morning (May 31) has flooded houses, destroying vehicles and belongings of the inhabitants of that place. In several parts of the country deaths are reported due to landslides caused by heavy rains. "The country is also in quarantine due to the coronavirus pandemic, which adds to the precarious situation experienced by many families with limited resources." El Salvador's Civil Defense Agency said at least seven people had died in the flooding, according to media reports.

International Space Station flies in front of moon in rare footage, just hours after SpaceX Dragon crew capsule docks

A videographer in Switzerland has captured footage of the International Space Station crossing in front of the moon. The rare footage was filmed just hours after two Nasa astronauts docked the SpaceX Dragon crew capsule to the ISS. The ISS is often visible during the night but flying in front of the moon happens much less often. Filmer Olivier Staiger had checked websites transit-finder.com and heavens-above.com in advance and travelled 20 miles from his home to capture the moment, where he knew there would be a "narrow path of visibility." He captured the ISS passing in front of the moon at 22:28 local time from the city of Sierre. "I could track it for three minutes before coming into shot," Staiger told Newsflare by phone on Sunday evening. "The ISS is brighter than any star, because it's so big and illuminated by the sun. There is no contrail behind it and it is not blinking." Staiger adds: "The first scene is filmed in wide angle (52.5 mm), overexposed to show the surrounding stars. Then a short clip, repeated five times, shows a closeup view of the moon as the ISS flew across [it], filmed with another camera/lens combination."

MiG-21 Analogue

During the development of the Tu-144 (aka the Concordski) the Tupolev design bureau needed hard data on the performance of the ogival wing intended for their SST. This design was pilfered from the Concorde development project and since they did not design it they new little about it's performance. Enter the MiG-21. Intended as a flying test bed for the wing design it actually got good reviews from pilots. One of the test pilots suggested putting the Analogue into production as a front line aircraft. This was not to be. They built 2 of these if my memory serves me correctly. As an aside I have seen this plane in person at the Monino air museum outside Moscow in 2007. Some place here I have some digital photos of that visit. One of the most interesting planes there is the T-100 Sotka a subject for another day. Like most of these videos the music kind of blows, but, it is some neat footage here. I hope you find it interesting.

Focke Wulf FW-187

The FW-187 is another obscure design that I am fond of. Powered by two relatively low powered engines it was still a fast plane. For inexplicable reasons the Luftwaffe were not interested and Instead went for the Ta-154 Moskito (likely because it was in direct competition with the British Mosquito) . The Moskito was a troubled aircraft let down by poor adhesive in it's wood construction. Not so for the FW-187. A plane that looked fast just sitting still was limited to IIRC about 6 examples or so. It was also used in factory defense and probably enjoyed at least a kill or two. (Wikipedia says not, but, I think they are full of it based on everything I have read). I hope you find it interesting.

Minnesota Officials Link Arrested Looters to White Supremacist Groups

As Minneapolis underwent a fourth night of protests over the death of George Floyd, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said Saturday that most rioters arrested are from outside of the city and sought to take advantage of the chaos. In a press conference held in the early hours of Saturday morning, Gov. Walz said he is authorizing "full mobilization" of the state's National Guard, adding 1,000 National Guard to join the 700 already there, calling it "an action that has never been taken in the 164 year history of the Minnesota National Guard." "Our goal is to decimate that force as quickly as possible," Walz said of rioters who looted and burned buildings. "Our cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are under assault." Later in the day, Walz said 2,500 guardsmen and women would be activated. He said about 80% of those arrested for looting and vandalism could be outside agitators. "Our great cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are under assault by people who do not share our values, who do not value life and the work that went into this and are certainly not here to honor George Floyd," Walz said. "They need to see today that that line will stop and order needs to be restored." "Let's be very clear, the situation in Minneapolis is no longer in any way about the murder of George Floyd," he added. St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter said most of the arrests made last night were of people from out of state and while "there's a group of folks that are sad and mourning," he said "there seems to be another group that are using Mr. Floyd's death as a cover to create havoc." Department of Safety Commissioner John Harrington said they are contact-tracing the arrested and added that an investigation is underway about white nationalist groups posting online to encourage their members to use the protests as a cover to create chaos. He said some of the 40 arrests made in the Twin Cities Friday night were of people linked to white supremacist groups and organized crime.

Police release video from fatal shooting Tuesday

Police have uploaded video clips from a gunfight that left a man dead and an officer injured Tuesday night on Lansing's north side. The video clips were taken from police body-camera and dash-camera footage recorded during the incident on North Walnut Street, Lansing police said. The video was posted on YouTube. Police noted that the video clips include images and audio that some people may find disturbing. The incident happened about 9 p.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of North Walnut Street. Jason Jesse Gallegos, 37, was shot and killed after stepping out of a house and opening fire at officers staged outside, police said. The officers were responding to a reported domestic assault and a gun being fired inside the residence. They were trying to negotiate with Gallegos when he came out of the house with weapons. A Lansing officer suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, police said. Along with the uploaded video, Lansing police on Friday released a timeline of events and a few more details about the incident. According to the timeline, officers arrived at the scene at 8:29 p.m.and began trying to communicate with the suspect and a woman inside. A woman came outside and talked with officers, and police began talking with Gallegos via cellphone "in attempts to de-escalate the situation." Armed with a shotgun and a handgun, the man walked outside at 9:01 p.m. and "begins shooting at officers," police said. "Officers returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect," they said.

George Floyd's Killer's Mugshot Released - Derek Chauvin Arrested

The ex-cop that murdered George Floyd has been arrested and his mugshot has been released. Derek Michael Chauvin is in the Ramsey County Jail in Saint Paul, Minnesota charged with one count of Third Degree Murder and one count of Manslaughter. His diet is now restricted to bare bones inmate meals or processed foods from the commissary. People with money like Chauvin typically gain significant weight due to the fatty foods they are forced to eat to avoid starving. He will no doubt be in a cell by himself for his own safety where he will only get out for an hour or two a day if that at first. He will be a "walk alone" which is a form of protective custody that keeps people like him safe in jail. Ernst Heinkel came up with the He280 as a competitor to the Me262. It was actually faster than the ME262 and a more mature design. Heinkel, however, was not the most devoted Nazi and actually lost control of his own company due to this. The 262 did have swept wings, but, this was not a primary design feature. The slight sweep of the wings was actually due to center of gravity concerns as the initial calculations were wrong. The wing sweep was employed to correct this. There could be only one. There were not enough engines to go around and both could never have been produced at the same time. This is not the most complete story on the 280. The music also sucks, but, turn down the volume and enjoy some visuals.

Three years after Sacramento County deputies fired 28 rounds and killed Mikel McIntyre, an unarmed black man who was running from them along Highway 50 during rush hour, Sheriff Scott Jones has released the internal affairs file that concludes the shooting was "appropriate, justified and within policy." The 1,193 pages of documents, as well as photos and videos that Jones had resisted releasing until The Sacramento Bee filed one lawsuit and threatened to file another, differs sharply from the conclusion reached in August 2018 by the county's Inspector General, former Sacramento Police Chief Rick Braziel, who found the shooting was "excessive, unnecessary" and put citizens at risk. The documents were released as the nation has been shaken by the in-custody death of another unarmed black man, George Floyd, who died Monday after a Minneapolis police officer held his knee on the handcuffed, prone man's neck for several minutes, and follows years of protests in Sacramento over the police shooting of Stephon Clark, another unarmed black man killed in March 2018. Jones has consistently maintained his deputies did nothing wrong in the McIntyre shooting, which occurred as the 32-year-old man was suffering from a mental health crisis and had assaulted deputies with large river rocks before trying to run from them. He was struck seven times by bullets, six times in the back. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office later also found the shooting "justified." The May 8, 2017, shooting near Highway 50 and Zinfandel Drive resulted in a lawsuit that the county settled for $1.725 million without conceding wrongdoing. Many of the details have been released previously, specifically because of the report by Braziel, which resulted in Jones locking him out of Sheriff's Office facilities and effectively ending his tenure as inspector general.

Armed robbery victim stabs suspect

An Albuquerque man tried robbing the wrong person at knife-point and the would-be criminal ended up on a stretcher. Witnesses helped police put the pieces together of how armed robbery suspect Nathan Pacheco was stabbed on the west side in late February. "This guy attacked him," one woman told police. "He was not straight. And then he came out here and we just saw them yelling," another witness said. One woman who was rendering aid to Pacheco until first responders carried him away on a stretcher, said Pacheco was the one who started the trouble by trying to rob another man of his phone and wallet outside the Oasis Vape Shop at Golf Course and Irving. "I felt threatened. He asked me for my wallet. I said, 'Ok, this is probably not going to end well,'" the victim told police. "Our guy ran up to him with what looked like a pocket knife in hand, trying to like, punch him or bang open the window," one officer told another. The robbery victim admitted he stabbed Pacheco out of self-defense, using a knife he keeps on him for work. "I turned around for one second and the dude f***ing rushed me, man," the victim said. "The guy charged him. The guy just stuck him," the witness added. Surveillance video from the vape shop confirmed their stories. "He confronts the guy breaking into his car, which he has a right to," one officer told the other. The robbery victim was detained but not arrested, with the officer telling him about another option if he's faced with a similar situation again. "You see him, walk the opposite direction. Get away from the area," the officer told the victim. The district attorney's office argued Pacheco should be held behind bars until trial because of the nature of this crime and the overwhelming evidence against him. Judge Daniel Gallegos agreed.

Joshua Waring, the son of a "Real Housewives" star, attack in jail

An Orange County jail inmate has testified in court that a sheriff's deputy gave him a homemade knife with instructions to stab former inmate Joshua Waring, the son of a "Real Housewives" star. Korrell Cole, testifying under penalty of perjury, said he kept the knife but did not follow through on the attack. Waring was eventually slashed with a razor by another inmate and has sued deputies for allegedly trying to kill him. Cole's testimony is the first independent corroboration of Waring's accusations against deputies. Waring, the son of "Real Housewives of Orange County" cast member Laurie Peterson, was jailed for nearly four years while awaiting trial on charges of shooting a man in 2016 outside a sober living home in Costa Mesa. He pleaded guilty in March to lesser charges and was released with time served. While he was in custody, Waring's defense team triggered a national scandal after discovering that the jail's telephone vendor recorded nearly 34,000 confidential attorney-client calls - in violation of state law and legal tenets. Waring alleged the attack on his life was in retaliation for his whistleblowing. In a suit filed in April, Waring alleged that after he complained about the eavesdropping he noticed that mail from his attorney was being opened by jailers. When he brought it up to Deputy Ever Zelaya, he was told, "I'll choke your bitch ass out and get a promotion."

Police look for suspect seen tripping elderly woman

Burnaby RCMP are investigating a concerning assault after an elderly Asian woman was randomly tripped while walking near a SkyTrain station. The incident happened on April 3, police said in a statement on Thursday (May 28). It's unclear why it has taken more than two months for the incident to be made public. Mounties released surveillance footage detailing the incident, which shows the 84-year-old elderly woman walking on Central Boulevard near Metrotown Skytrain Station. A woman can be seen walking behind the elderly woman before sticking her leg out and tripping her. The senior was "shaken and thankfully not seriously injured," police said. The suspect is described as possibly being of Asian descent, with dark brown hair. At the time she was wearing a face mask, black tights, a long dark puffy jacket and light shoes. A night club owner had to transform his pub into a noodle house to survive through the pandemic. Since the coronavirus outbreak, bars and entertainment venuers were the first ones that were ordered to close by the Thai government. Pongsakorn Laokittisak, 37, from Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, had sold his precious amulet collections to support his employees and help the locals during the economic downturn. He has kept his employees and ordered them to cook food to distribute to the needy locals in the early state of the lockdown. However, the pandemic has lasted longer than he expected so he decided to turn his night club business into a noodle shop. Footage shows the business after it has now turned into a food shop crowded with a different kind of customer. The owner said he could no longer wait for the government to reopen his pub because his money will run out before long. He said: "I do not want to dismiss my employees because this period is hard for many locals, especially the people that are unemployed. "However, without any income I could not pay their salary for much longer. Luckily that the government is now allowing restaurants to reopen and I think this is our way out." Despite the need for money, the generous owner still sells the noodles in a cheap price. He also gives out some of his amulets to customers as a gift if they have reached the threshold amount of order. He added that giving away the amulet is to support the locals' sentiment during this hard time. He said: "Money and food might keep people carrying on with their physical need but some people also need something to hold on especially in this hard time so I give some amulet for them to support them spiritually."

President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to "strongly regulate" or even shut down social media platforms after Twitter applied a fact-check to two of his tweets this week. He's expected to sign an executive order pertaining to social media Thursday, but it is still unclear what the substance of the order may contain. Trump's threats on Wednesday are the clearest expression of intent to use the power of government to target his perceived political enemies in the private sector -- businesses that already enjoy wide latitude under the law to moderate their platforms as they see fit. And it raises the stakes for Twitter and Facebook as they grapple with Trump's misleading claims about mail-in voting and his baseless insinuations that a cable TV news host had a hand in an aide's death decades ago. Hostile crowd confronts police, sparking memories of similar incident

Two Chicago police officers who chased an armed man near the scene of a triple shooting in the Armour Square neighborhood Tuesday night found themselves in a precarious position. While they seized a gun from the man and placed him into custody, a hostile crowd approached "yelling profanities while threatening to harm them if they did not let the individual in custody go," according to a CPD statement. The crowd began throwing glass bottles at the officers, prompting them to declare a "10-1" police emergency that drew back-up units to the scene. The officers were not injured and the allegedly armed man, 18-year-old Shamar Hunter, is charged with a felony. The incident bears many similarities to an incident last year in which two police officers were threatened by a crowd as they detained a man on the West Side. CWBChicago recently received 41 CPD bodyworn camera and dashcam videos from the March 2019 confrontation nearly a year after we asked for the footage in an open records request. Unlike Tuesday's incident, two men - including one who was handcuffed - escaped from police with the assistance of bystanders last year. Two officers said members of the crowd threatened to shoot them if they didn't release a man they had detained. And, shots were fired nearby as the confrontation unfolded. Two police officers pulled Robert Gates over for a traffic violation on the 4700 West Gladys around 2:10 p.m. on St. Patrick's Day last year, according to CPD records. Gates, age 31, got out of the vehicle and tossed a bag containing suspected narcotics under the van, the officers said. The two officers' bodyworn cameras were rolling as one officer handcuffed Gates and the other bent down to look under his van. When Gates saw the officer reach under his vehicle, he began fighting with the other cop. The officer who went to the van then began chasing a bystander who allegedly took the suspected narcotics from under Gates' van and threatened the cops. Shots can be heard ringing out nearby as the officer chases the man. Meanwhile, the other officer continued to struggle with Gates until a man identified by police as 30-year-old Anthony James stepped in and pulled Gates away. The second officer's bodyworn camera shows Gates getting to his feet and running down an alley with his hands cuffed behind his back. Gates got away. Police caught up with him 10 days later to face charges of escape and aggravated battery of a police officer. The case is pending. CPD records show he has been arrested four times since then. James also got away. Police caught up with him on March 27, too. He is facing charges of aiding escape from a police officer, aggravated assault of a police officer, and resisting police. James, who was on parole at the time, is an Undertaker Vice Lord street gang member, according to a CPD arrest report.

Minneapolis Park Police bodycam video in George Floyd death

Body camera footage released by the Minneapolis Parks Police Wednesday shows an officer monitoring a vehicle near where George Floyd was removed from a car by Minneapolis Police before his death in police custody. The Parks Police's involvement in the Floyd death was in question because bystander video of an officer kneeling on his head showed a Minneapolis Parks Police squad car. Park Police Chief Jason Ohotto said an officer responded to a request for assistance from Minneapolis Police Monday night around 8:10 p.m. at 38th Street East and Chicago Avenue. The officer's camera was activated throughout the call. It showed the officer monitoring a vehicle that was thought to be related to the original call. Chief Ohotto estimates the officer was 118 feet away from the incident and the officer could not see the incident between the MPD officers and Floyd. "Based on a review of the body worn camera footage, which is being released to demonstrate the vantage point of the Park Police officer, the Park Police officer was not in a location to witness or intervene in the MPD incident," said the Park Police Department in a release.

Greece finally celebrates Easter at churches after 40 days, due to coronavirus lockdown

Greece finally celebrates Easter at churches at midnight, on Tuesday, May 26, after 40 days, due to coronavirus lockdown. This decision was taken by the Standing Holy Synod, as due to the coronavirus the Holy Week services were performed behind closed doors and the faithful watched them on television or online. The churches will welcome the faithful, observing all the foreseen measures and instructions of the State. For the first time ever in history, the Greek Orthodox faithful will celebrate the Resurrection of Christ on a Tuesday, instead of the traditional Saturday midnight liturgy earlier at April in the Spring. Due to the coronavirus pandemic the traditional Pascha (Easter) celebration was moved from April 19 to May 26, so the faithful and pilgrim can join in all the festivities associated with the greatest feast on the Christian calendar. According to a circular issued recently by the Church of Greece, the Archdiocese urges all churches and monasteries to hold the Divine Liturgy of the Resurrection "in order to give the faithful the opportunity to revive the joy of Easter which they were deprived of due to the coronavirus pandemic." The Holy Fire arrived on Easter Saturday, April 18, but state authorities had forbidden its distribution to churches - and consequently the congregations - in an effort to stem the spread of the virus. According to the circular, the Holy Fire will finally be distributed at 11:45 PM on Tuesday, the Sequence of the Resurrection will start at midnight sharp with the solemn ringing of the bells, and the Divine Liturgy of the Resurrection will then follow. It still must be noted, however, that keeping a safe distance between worshippers is essential inside churches. The number of faithful allowed inside each church will be set according to the size of the building. This measure is valid in every building across the country until June 5.

A Kamloops resident is hoping surveillance video will help identify a person who decided to use her property as a urinal. The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, lives on the north end of Grasslands Boulevard in Westsyde. On Sunday, May 24, at 2 a.m., the homeowner's video-surveillance system captured three males, who appear to be teens, loitering on the road directly in front of her driveway. All are wearing backpacks. One teen leaves the group and walks onto the driveway and toward a container. There, he removes the lid of the container and proceeds to urinate on the soil within - soil that was to be used for gardening at the home. The teen is wearing a blue hoodie and ball cap, with the hoodie pulled over the ball cap. On the left arm of the hoodie are the words, in all-caps white, "OFF THE WALL." There are black and white racing-flag checkers along the bottom of his hoodie and along the cuffs of the garment. He is also wearing green camouflage pants and white runners with black laces. On his back is a dark blue backpack with polka dots.

Family members said the woman and her dog disappeared Monday morning. Officer responded to a neighborhood near Via Escola and Weston Street. A drone operator spotted the woman on the ground behind brush with her dog by her side. Both were in good conditions, police said.

Sheriff opens internal investigation after video shows deputy punching woman

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office has opened an internal police investigation after a video circulated on Facebook showing a white deputy repeatedly punching a black woman during an arrest. Deputies arrived in the Apple Ridge neighborhood in Ypsilanti Township around midnight May 26, after reports of around 30 people arguing led to gunshots, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies located a 34-year-old woman with a gunshot wound in the back and identified a suspect in the neighborhood. When they attempted to make a perimeter around the home where the shooting was believed to have taken place, deputies ordered two people, a married couple, to leave the scene, but the two refused to leave, according to MLive. The two resisted when deputies tried to physically remove them from the scene. Video of the incident shows one deputy, a white male, punching the woman repeatedly in the head while the other used a taser on the husband before taking both into custody, reports MLive.

The body camera footage is part of a nearly nine-minute video, created by the Police Department and posted to YouTube. A statement released via email described the video as "a Critical Incident Community Briefing which incorporates video footage and factual information for public viewing." The video analyzes the footage from the night in December when Torrance police fatally shot Christopher De'Andre Mitchell, who officers say was in a stolen car and had a rifle between his legs. "The Torrance Police Department remains committed to transparency," the department said in a statement. City Attorney Patrick Sullivan announced on Tuesday, April 23, that the video would be released soon, but offered no other details, citing ongoing litigation with Mitchell's mother. Sherlyn Haynes, Mitchell's mother, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and its Police Department. NYC Woman Calls Police On Black Man After He Politely Asks Her To Leash Her Dog

Social media is outraged by a video showing a white woman in New York City's Central Park threatening to call the cops on a Black man after he asked her to leash her dog. While threats from white people is nothing new to most Black folks, what stands out about this particular incident is that the woman in question seems to know the exact implication of a white woman calling the police on a Black man. Video posted to Twitter on Monday (May 15) by the man's sister shows the white woman approaching the Black man, who is filming the encounter, telling him, "Please stop, sir I'm asking you to stop recording." When the man asks her to back away from him, she threatens to call the cops. "I'm going to tell them there's an African American man threatening my life," she says. The woman, identified as Amy Cooper, VP of Investment Solutions at Franklin Templeton, then continues, "I'm in the Ramble and an African American man with a bicycle helmet, he is recording me and threatening my dog." After a long pause, she then suddenly gets hysterical. "I'm sorry I can't hear," she cries."I'm being threatened by a man in the Ramble, please send the cops immediately." Central Park states that dogs must be on a leash from 9am to 9pm in the Ramble - a protected nature reserve between 73rd and 78th Streets. The man who recorded the video is identified as a bird-watcher by his sister, who posted the video to Twitter.

USS Freedom: The Tour. Day Two of USS Freedom's visit to Buffalo, NY in 2008. I didn't want to wait in line so I hopped in with the first guided tour, Local Naval Cadets. I told their Commander I'll donate the video and photos to them if I can tag along. Which he agreed to. The Captain kindly let me film because I had Facebooked him the shot of them roaster-tailing it in front of Point Abino, Canada the day before. He said he "loved that shot" and I could film as long as "nothing I posted could get his men killed". I told him, "I have their back." Anyway, I edited this last night (after some kayaking). As for the music, I had Mormon Tabernacle choir's Battle Hymn of the Republic but just had to say fuck it but with a song I had of equal length. Anyway, it is what it is. Right now Hong Kong is exempt from U.S. tariffs and other economic measures the U.S. has deployed against China. If Beijing takes full control, that could quickly change. . . . Prior to the Wuhan virus President Trump was positioning the confrontation between the U.S. and China based on economics and trade. Within that dynamic Beijing had a weak hand and President Trump exploited their vulnerabilities with a geopolitical strategy to dismantle China's one-belt/one-road expansion plan. . . Rooster killer arrested for violating Hawaii Covid-19 quarantine.

From the Star-Advertiser: Special agents arrested a 20-year-old Oregon man and a 19-year-old Washington state man on Friday afternoon in Waikiki for allegedly violating the state's 14-day quarantine mandate for travelers, the state Attorney General's Office reported today. Social media posts lead to the arrests of Artyon Zhiryada of Happy Valley, Ore., and Dan Vlasenko of Vancouver, Wash., as they were leaving a condominium on Lewers Street. Both arrived in Honolulu on May 16 and indicated they were staying at a friend's condominium, according to the news release. They allegedly immediately broke the quarantine rule and "showed off their escapades by posting their adventures on social media sites as they traveled to various locations around Honolulu." Zhiryada also faces an additional charge of cruelty to animals for allegedly posting a video showing himself shooting a feral chicken with a spear gun in a Waikiki parking lot. Investigators booked and charged both men for violating the 14-day quarantine mandate. Zhiryada's bail was set at $4,500 and Vlasenko's bail was set at $4,000. They were unable to post bail at this time.
