Summit fails because North Korea wanted all sanctions lifted

The Vietnam summit failed because North Korea wanted all sanctions lifted, said US President Donald Trump during a press conference after a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Vietnam. Trump said that the agreement papers were ready to be signed on Wednesday but that the deal on the table just wasn't "appropriate". "I could've signed today but I want to do it right than do it fast," said Trump. In an earlier statement, the White House said that Trump and Kim failed to reach an agreement during their two-day summit in Vietnam but that they still had constructive discussions on denuclearisation. "President Donald J. Trump of the United States and Chairman Kim Jong Un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea had very good and constructive meetings in Hanoi, Vietnam, on February 27-28, 2019. The two leaders discussed various ways to advance denuclearisation and economic driven concepts. No agreement was reached at this time, but their respective teams look forward to meeting in the future." At the press conference, Trump said that Kim was prepared to denuclearise a "large portion" if the US lifted all sanctions. But in the end, it wasn't the area that the US wanted denuclearised so the deal could not work. "We have to have sanctions and he wants to denuke, but he wants to just do areas that are less important than the areas that we want. We know the country very well, believe it or not. We know every inch of that country, and we have to get what we have to get. Because that's a big give," he said. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that even if the two sides made "real progress" during the summit, they didn't get "all the way". "Unfortunately, we didn't get all the way that ultimately made sense for the United States of America. I think chairman Kim was hopeful that we would. We asked him to do more. He was unprepared to do that, but I'm optimistic," said Pompeo, adding that US and North Korean teams will be getting together in the weeks ahead to keep working on a deal. Trump said that he wanted to take off sanctions but that North Korea had to "give up more". However, the US leader did not note that he was promised by Kim that they would cease all testing of rockets and nuclear. The US president remained vague on whether he would be having another summit with the North Korean leader. News of the summit being cut short sent South Korea's market tumbling. On military exercises with South Korea? Trump said that he gave those up because of their cost. "We spend hundreds of millions of dollars on those exercises, and I hated to see it. I thought it was unfair. And frankly, I was sort of the opinion that South Korea should help us with that." On Michael Cohen's testimony Trump said that his former lawyer's testimony was "incorrect" and that it's timing, in the middle of the summit with Kim, was a "terrible thing". The US president said Cohen lied about everything except the collusion with the Russian hoax. "He said no collusion, and I was a little impressed by that, frankly. He could have gone all out. He only went about 95% instead of 100%. But the fact is there is no collusion, and I call it the witch hunt." Cohen told the House committee on Wednesday that Trump knew ahead of time that WikiLeaks had emails damaging to 2016 Democratic rival Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and that Trump is a "racist," a "conman" and a "cheat." But delivered no evidence that Trump or his campaign colluded with Moscow during the presidential campaign. What was said during the summit? Earlier Kim and Trump seemed more confident at making progress in their talks. Kim said he would be willing to denuclearise, speaking on the second day of his summit with US President Donald Trump in Hanoi, Vietnam. The two leaders held more one-on-one talks and roundtable discussions hoping to improve relations and reach a deal on denuclearisation. "If I'm not willing to do that, I won't be here right now," Kim told reporters through an interpreter when asked if he was ready to give up his nuclear weapons. However, the North Korean leader did not elaborate on what denuclearisation meant or the concrete steps he would be taking. While the US would like North Korea to give up all its nuclear weapons, North Korea wants the removal of a US nuclear umbrella for its Asian allies such as South Korea and Japan. Trump said he was in no rush to see North Korea denuclearise. "I've been saying very much from the beginning that speed is not that important to me. I very much appreciate no testing of nuclear rockets, missiles, any of it, very much appreciate it," Trump told reporters. "Chairman Kim and myself, we want to do the right deal." Kim, for his part, remained more vague on whether he would be able to strike a deal with Trump. "It's too early to tell, but I wouldn't say I'm pessimistic. For what I feel right now, I do have a feeling that good results will come out," he said, in what was believed to be his first ever response to a foreign journalist. Trump again reiterated North Korea's potential to be an "economic powerhouse". Kim didn't know Otto Warmbler's death When asked about the responsibility for the death of American Otto Warmbier after he was detained in North Korea, Trump said that Kim told him that he didn't know about it and that he would take the chairman's word. "I really believe something horrible happened to him, and I really don't think the top leadership knew about it. [...] And I did speak about it, but I don't believe he would have allowed that to happen. It just wasn't to his advantage to allow that to happen." A US office in Pyongyang? Kim also said he was ready to "welcome" a US office in Pyongyang, signalling the start of new US-North Korean relations. South Korean reaction "We do regret that President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un did not reach a complete agreement at today's summit. But, it is clear that (the summit) made meaningful progress than any other time in the past," said Kim Eui Keum, SK's presidential spokesperson in a briefing following the breakdown of the Hanoi summit. "We understand that the two leaders expanded the scope and the depth of understanding for where each other stood by carrying out in-depth discussion. In particular, President Trump's expressed continued determination to engage in talks and his optimistic views allow for the bright prospect for the next summit. "The fact that, President Trump openly expressed his desire to lift sanctions in relation to North Korea's denuclearisation proves that the level of discussion between the US and NK has been elevated further up," Kim said. Bodyguards push motorised stairs aside for Air Force One to take off

It was a day on which nothing quite went to plan for Donald Trump. After leaving an impeccably prepared dining room empty, with a menu months in the making stewing in the kitchen after unexpectedly breaking off talks with Kim Jong Un, the US president said he was looking forward to returning to Washington. However, there was one more hitch as the vehicle carrying the stairs for Trump and his entourage to board Air Force One broke down. A security team was hastily dispatched to push the equipment out of the way so the plane could take off.

Six satellites launched as part of new internet project to serve remote areas

A rocket carrying six satellites took off from French Guiana on Wednesday. It's the first step in a project aimed at giving millions of people in remote areas of the world access to high speed internet. The project is the brainchild of Airbus SE and One Web. OneWeb is part-financed by the Virgin Group's Virgin Galactic. Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, was present at the launch. Branson commented: "I was very lucky to be here today and it was a magnificent launch. And obviously, like four or five days ago when we put three people into space, you cross everything that all is going to go well. And today, we are putting six satellites into space with OneWeb. And it's very important, it's to be part of a constellation ultimately of over 2,000 satellites. So when they successfully reached space, and they had broken away from the rocket and were climbing, there was a big celebration here."

Trump claims 95% of former attorney Cohen's testimony was lies

Donald Trump has claimed that the explosive testimony from his former attorney was 95 per cent lies. Hitting back against Michael Cohen, the US President said it was "terrible" that the Congress hearing took place while he was the Vietnam Summit. But he claimed ironically that he was "impressed" that Cohen had not claimed he had colluded with Moscow. "He lied a lot," said Trump. " But it was very interesting because he didn't lie about one thing: he said no collusion with the Russian hoax. And I said, 'I wonder why he didn't just lie about that too. I was actually impressed that he didn't say, 'Well, I think there was collusion for this reason or that.' He didn't say that. He said no collusion. And I was a little impressed by that, frankly. He could've gone all out. He only went about 95 percent instead of 100 percent. But the fact is, there is no collusion and I call it the witch hunt. This should never happen to another president. This is so bad for our country. So bad." Cohen claimed before Congress on Wednesday that Trump himself was a "liar" a "racist" and a "conman". "I am ashamed of my weakness and my misplaced loyalty, of the things I did for Mr. Trump in an effort to protect and promote him. I am ashamed that I chose to take part in concealing Mr. Trump's illicit acts, rather than listening to my own conscience," he said.

What goes up must come down...Train cars disconnected from the locomotive

A few cars miraculously did not fall under the cars unhooked from the locomotive at the crossing near Temirtau. The camera of the registrar captured a dangerous moment. The incident occurred on the evening of February 22 in the Kuzembayev mine area, which, like the railway line itself, belongs to ArcelorMittal Temirtau. The frames show how the loaded train crossed the road, after which the crossing was opened, but less than a minute later several cars passed in the opposite direction, followed by a diesel locomotive. Several drivers noticed the "fugitives" on time and stopped in front of the railway tracks. As it turned out, such cases often occur at this crossing. A source in the company explained to the site inbusiness.kz that because of work at the mine, the land constantly sinks, and with it the railway. When descending into the formed lowland, the train picks up speed in order to rise to the top, but it is here that, as a rule, the wagons go "free-floating". "In order to repair and align this section, it is necessary to block traffic on the only highway that goes from Karaganda to the satellite cities of Saran, Abay, Shakhtinsk and further to Zhezkazgan," the company representative explained.

Miami elephant dies after fight with another 'Golden Girl' pachyderm

An elephant known in her Miami zoo as one of the"Golden Girls" died after fighting with another elderly elephant. Cita, a 50-year-old African elephant,"was knocked down and unable to recover" after an encounter withanother African elephant named Peggy, Zoo Miami said in an online statement. "This is a very difficult time for the Zoo Miami family, as well as the staff and volunteers at the Virginia Zoo where Cita had lived for decades," the zoo said. "This is especially difficult for the elephant keepers who have a very special bond with these magnificent and charismatic animals that they so passionately dedicate themselves to caring for." According to zoo officials, Cita suffered from several age-related issues including muscle wasting, advanced arthritis and general loss of body condition. Though the average lifespan of an elephant is 70 years, their life expectancy shortens in captivity to between 35 and 45 years, Zoo Miami Director Ron Magill told the Miami Herald. "The sad reality is the lifespan of animals is not as long as humans," he said. "It doesn't make it easier to lose one." An extensive necropsy was done on the aged elephant to determine the exact cause of death. The test results won't be completed for several weeks but the zoo believes a blood clot may have been a contributing factor. "Elephants are very social animals and have a strict hierarchy within their groups. Confrontations within those groups to reinforce an individual's status are not uncommon. Unfortunately, because of Cita's advanced age, Peggy's effort to reinforce her dominance resulted in Cita being knocked down," the zoo explained. Staff attempted to revive Cita, giving her medicine and support to help relieve pain but they were unable to get her back on her feet. Cita was moved to Zoo Miami in 2016 from the Virginia Zoo along with another elephant named Lisa, who died in 2017 from a mesenteric torsion, a condition in animals where the bowels twist around the mesenteric axis. They joined two other African elephants Peggy and Mabel and the four were called the zoo's "Golden Girls" because they were all over the age of 40 and were spending their retirement in Miami. Officials in Wisconsin released video footage of adeadly pileup involving 131 carsa collision thought by many to be "the largest traffic crash in the state's history." Videos and photos from the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office show southbound Interstate 41 near Neenah at a standstill in whiteout conditions on Sunday. Sheriff John Matz said that a chain reaction crashleft some vehicles at a "total loss and not drivable." Andrew Schefelker, a 30-year-old science teacher, was killed in the crash, and 71 others who received a "multitude of injuries" were takento nearby hospitals. Matz said first responders exercised a"mass casualty plan" in the aftermath of the pileup. During a seven-hour period on Sunday, the sheriff's office said it received 772 911 calls, "resulting in 108 calls for service." Two women who said they were involved in the pileup told Fox affiliate WMSN-TV they "were a sitting duck" as they waited for help to arrive. "We came around a corner, and it was just a total white wall of snow. You couldn't see five feet in front of you," Nicole Adrian told the news station. Susan Brugger added that they were on the phone with emergency officials when they were hit. "Asemi jack-knifed and probably sent us 50 feet, and everybody was kind of juggling around," Adrian said. "You could tell we were jacked up in the air, and there was a car that was underneath our rear end behind us. There was no way to get out." Brugger added that first responders used the "jaws of life" to rescue them from the car. A firefightershouted, "There's two people in here and they're still alive." It was to Brugger "a surreal moment" she'll not soon forget. Wisconsin State Trooper Chris Splinter told the news station that the whiteout conditions seen on Interstate41 on Sunday are common for this time of year, He said he wasn't surprised bythe number of vehicles involved because of how dangerous the driving conditions were. "The vehicles coming up behind them can't stop fast enough because they're following too close or going too fast for the conditions, and then they start just piling into one another," Splinter said. "It's almost like they're just driving into a wall of cars, just like they're driving through whiteout conditions." View more: https://youtu.be/5wSmWeXOG-4
