Adding a bit of noise-spice/surrealism into the mix at Pacha Ibiza 31/7/18. Live, impromptu, battery operated, harsh noise performance at The Balcony Bar. Getting the gear into the club was a feat! It had to be as small & loud as possible, I had to find the best stuff available in the world, modify some of it myself & then think of an excuse to get it past security. When the doorman opened my bag, saw the gear & took out the dazzlingly decorated, modified, voice changer/megaphone he looked a bit shocked & snapped "what's this?" I said I'd been making an arty music . Then he looked like he was deliberating about whether to let me in the club or not. Then he said "Ok, you must put it in the cloakroom", escorted me there and made sure it went in. So then I thought, Oh well, I tried. But when I was walking in I thought, what about getting it out of the cloakroom & pretending to leave later on when a few people were leaving & trying to discretely sneak it back in then. So at about 4am, after a bit of planning I started watching the cloakroom entrance, when it started to get busy & there was no security about I got in the queue, got my bag & when I sussed the cloakroom girl wasn't looking I quickly slipped back into the club & up to the balcony bar where the club music was the quietest. All I had to do then was keep an eye out for security & discretely set up. Mission successful! Trump freezes federal worker pay, citing 'serious economic conditions' by Gregory Korte, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump said he would freeze the pay of federal workers next year, saying the nation can't afford the 2.1% raises that would have gone into effect without presidential action. In a notice to Congress Thursday, Trump cited "serious economic conditions" in cutting pay to civilian workers. "We must maintain efforts to put our nation on a fiscally sustainable course, and federal agency budgets cannot sustain such increases," Trump said. It would be the first pay freeze for civilian federal workers since 2011 to 2013, when President Barack Obama instituted a three-year pay freeze as the nation recovered from the recession. But Trump's pay freeze comes even as he touts a booming economy. "The news from the Financial Markets is even better than anticipated," Trump tweeted just hours before announcing the pay freeze. "More good news is coming!" Under federal law, federal employees get cost-of-living raises every new year - in addition to specific increases in high-cost cities called "locality pay" - unless the president determines those raises would be "inappropriate." Among the factors the president can consider: economic growth, unemployment, various measures of inflation and the budget deficit. The federal budget deficit has grown 16 percent this fiscal year, the result of a combination of Trump-supported tax cuts and military spending, as well as increases in mandatory spending programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. The national debt - the accumulation of those budget deficits - has increased nearly $1.6 trillion over the past year, to $21.4 trillion. Congress can override the president's pay freeze through legislation. This month, the Senate voted of 96-2 to approve its version of a spending bill that would fix across-the-board civilian raises next year at 1.9 percent. Tony Reardon, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, called Trump's move "deeply disappointing" and an indication that the Trump administration "simply does not respect its own workforce." The pay freeze comes less than a week after a federal judge in Washington overturned parts of three Trump executive orders attempting to curtail the power of federal labor unions and institute merit-based pay systems for federal employees. U.S. District Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson said Trump didn't have the power to force changes to union contracts because they would violate the collective bargaining rights federal employees have under the law.

Chief U.S. spy catcher says China using LinkedIn to recruit Americans

By Warren Strobel and Jonathan Landay WASHINGTON, Aug 31 (Reuters) - The United States' top spy catcher said espionage agencies are using fake LinkedIn accounts to try to recruit Americans with access to government and commercial secrets, and the company should shut them down. William Evanina, the U.S. counter-intelligence chief, told Reuters in an interview that intelligence and law enforcement officials have told LinkedIn, owned by Microsoft Corp., about China's "super aggressive" efforts on the site. He said the campaign includes contacting thousands of LinkedIn members at a time, but he declined to say how many fake accounts U.S. intelligence had discovered, how many Americans may have been contacted and how much success China has had in the recruitment drive. German and British authorities have previously warned their citizens that Beijing is using LinkedIn to try to recruit them as spies. But this is the first time a U.S. official has publicly discussed the challenge in the United States and indicated it is a bigger problem than previously known. Evanina said LinkedIn should look at copying the response of Twitter, Google and Facebook, which have all purged fake accounts allegedly linked to Iranian and Russian intelligence agencies. "I recently saw that Twitter is cancelling, I don't know, millions of fake accounts, and our request would be maybe LinkedIn could go ahead and be part of that," said Evanina, who heads the U.S. National Counter-Intelligence and Security Center. It is highly unusual for a senior U.S. intelligence official to single out an American-owned company by name and publicly recommend it take action. LinkedIn boasts 562 million users in more than 200 counties and territories, including 149 million U.S. members. Evanina did not, however, say whether he was frustrated by LinkedIn's response or whether he believes it has done enough. LinkedIn's head of trust and safety, Paul Rockwell, confirmed the company had been talking to U.S. law enforcement agencies about espionage efforts. Earlier this month, LinkedIn said it had taken down "less than 40" fake accounts whose users were attempting to contact LinkedIn members associated with unidentified political organizations. Rockwell did not say whether those were accounts. "We are doing everything we can to identify and stop this activity," Rockwell told Reuters. "We've never waited for requests to act and actively identify bad actors and remove bad accounts using information we uncover and intelligence from a variety of sources including government agencies." Rockwell declined to provide numbers of fake accounts associated with intelligence agencies. He said the company takes "very prompt action to restrict accounts and mitigate and stop any essential damage that can happen" but gave no details. LinkedIn "is a victim here," Evanina said. "I think the cautionary tale ... is, 'You are going to be like Facebook. Do you want to be where Facebook was this past spring with congressional testimony, right?'" he said, referring to lawmakers' questioning of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Russia's use of Facebook to meddle in the 2016 U.S. elections. China's foreign ministry disputed Evanina's allegations. "We do not know what evidence the relevant U.S. officials you cite have to reach this conclusion. What they say is complete nonsense and has ulterior motives," the ministry said in a statement. EX-CIA OFFICER ENSNARED Evanina said he was speaking out in part because of the case of Kevin Mallory, a retired CIA officer convicted in June of conspiring to commit espionage for China. A fluent Mandarin speaker, Mallory was struggling financially when he was contacted via a LinkedIn message in February 2017 by a national posing as a headhunter, according to court records and trial evidence. The individual, using the name Richard Yang, arranged a telephone call between Mallory and a man claiming to work at a Shanghai think tank. During two subsequent trips to Shanghai, Mallory agreed to sell U.S. defense secrets - sent over a special cellular device he was given - even though he assessed his contacts to be intelligence officers, according to the U.S. government's case against him. He is due to be sentenced in September and could face life in prison. While Russia, Iran, North Korea and other nations also use LinkedIn and other platforms to identify recruitment targets, the U.S. intelligence officials said China is the most prolific and poses the biggest threat. U.S. officials said China's Ministry of State Security has "co-optees" - individuals who are not employed by intelligence agencies but work with them - set up fake accounts to approach potential recruits. They said the targets include experts in fields such as supercomputing, nuclear energy, nanotechnology, semi-conductors, stealth technology, health care, hybrid grains, seeds and green energy. intelligence uses bribery or phony business propositions in its recruitment efforts. Academics and scientists, for example, are offered payment for scholarly or professional papers and, in some cases, are later asked or pressured to pass on U.S. government or commercial secrets. Some of those who set up fake accounts have been linked to IP addresses associated with intelligence agencies, while others have been set up by bogus companies, including some that purport to be in the executive recruiting business, said a senior U.S. intelligence official, who requested anonymity in order to discuss the matter. The official said "some correlation" has been found between Americans targeted through LinkedIn and data hacked from the Office of Personnel Management, a U.S. government agency, in attacks in 2014 and 2015. The hackers stole sensitive private information, such as addresses, financial and medical records, employment history and fingerprints, of more than 22 million Americans who had undergone background checks for security clearances. The United States identified China as the leading suspect in the massive hacking, an assertion China's foreign ministry at the time dismissed as 'absurd logic.' UNPARALLELED SPYING EFFORT About 70 percent of China's overall espionage is aimed at the U.S. private sector, rather than the government, said Joshua Skule, the head of the FBI's intelligence division, which is charged with countering foreign espionage in the United States. "They are conducting economic espionage at a rate that is unparalleled in our history," he said. Evanina said five current and former U.S. officials - including Mallory - have been charged with or convicted of spying for China in the past two and a half years. He indicated that additional cases of suspected espionage for China by U.S. citizens are being investigated, but declined to provide details. U.S. intelligence services are alerting current and former officials to the threat and telling them what security measures they can take to protect themselves. Some current and former officials post significant details about their government work history online - even sometimes naming classified intelligence units that the government does not publicly acknowledge. LinkedIn "is a very good site," Evanina said. "But it makes for a great venue for foreign adversaries to target not only individuals in the government, formers, former CIA folks, but academics, scientists, engineers, anything they want. North Korean 'ghost boats' wash ashore in Russia

'Ghost' fishing boats from North Korea have been washing ashore in Russia after heavy storms. The chillingly empty vessels have been scattering Primorsky Krai, in Russia's Far East. The boats started being discovered around August 6 and 7. This particular footage was filmed in the Sea of Japan on August 6. Russia shares an 11 mile land border and a 12 nautical mile sea border with North Korea. The latest fishing vessels were found on Russky Island on August 25, filled with personal belongings but without a crew. On August 27 a yacht called 'The Time Machine' discovered a drifting boat bearing similar North Korean insignia near the uninhabited Stenin Island in the Sea of Japan. Yacht Captain Mikhail Yermakov told The Siberian Times that, "we passed the coordinates to the State Inspection of Small Boats, they notified [us] that they would think [about] what to do with it." "We did not see any people on board. We shouted but there was silence. Most likely the boat was brought by typhoons into our waters."

Russian and Syrian forces prepare for offensive in last rebel stronghold in Idlib province

An attack is looming on the last rebel stronghold in Syria, located in Idlib province. The Russian and Syrian foreign ministers held a press conference in Moscow yesterday after a closed door meeting, and indicated their forces would be moving in on Idlib. Much of the country is already back under government control. "What we need to do now is to wipe out those terrorist groups which persist, particularly within the de-escalation area of Idlib," said Sergey Lavrov. Walid al-Muallem, his Syrian counterpart, said that the Syrian army would "go all out" though efforts would be made to avoid civilian deaths. That hasn't assuaged the fears of the UN- Staffan de Mistura, UN Envoy to Syria, asked that humanitarian corridors be set up to allow civilians to escape before the assault. It might be the last large battle of the civil war that's raged for seven years. But not everyone is convinced that a humanitarian corridor is the best solution. Pawel Krzysiek is the outgoing head of communications for the Red Cross in Syria. He left Damascus this week and spoke to Good Morning Europe on Friday. "Look, from my perspective on the ground, I would be very very careful with creating an illusion of a humanitarian corridor," he said. "Our message is clear- all passages, all routes should be safe for the civilians. Civilians should by no means, in no circumstances should be targeted in the hostilities. And the fighting sides need to take it into consideration." Krzysiek says that between 600 and 800 thousand people have become displaced in Idlib province since late 2017- coming from outside as well as internally displaced. The region has doubled its population since the fighting began, creating particular concern for the effect of increased fighting on civilians there. In other areas of the country under government control, some Syrians are returning and trying to pick up the pieces of their lives. More than half the population was driven from their homes during the conflict. "The capital is fine but on every single corner you see really the devastating effect seven years of conflict has had on these people," said Krzysiek. "We have to acknowledge that this conflict had a direct and also indirect effect on civilians. They continue to suffer because of the terrible state of the economy, for instance."

At least today I know the policy and I know whether to work around this policy or with this policy and at least there's someone we can talk to and convince them about our situation." Lebanon's political challenges The country held parliamentary elections this year for the first time in nearly a decade but Hariri has yet to form a new government. Borges: "Why did you decide to resign last year?" Hariri: "I wanted to shock to the system. Because I believed the government was going the wrong way. People were taking sides and we weren't able to govern." Borges: "What is your relationship with Hezbollah?" Hariri: "We have political differences. Hezbollah knows that and I know that. They will never accept my policies vis-a-vis the gulf and I will never accept their policy vis-a-vis Iran. But it does mean we should stop the country from functioning." The prime minister says he will be working hard to form a government so he can implement the reforms Lebanon needs.

Video Shows Doctor Using CPR to Save Man During First Date

A fist date took a harrowing twist when a doctor used CPR to help save the life of a man when he suffered a heart attack during their first date at beach in Capitola. And the dramatic rescue was caught on camera. After surgery and months of recuperation, 56-year-old Max Montgomery is doing fine. And he and his date-turned-rescuer, Dr. Andi Traynor, are still seeing each other. "I happened to be with the right person at the right time," Montgomery joked during a video interview Wednesday. Now, the couple is sharing a video of the incident in hopes of spreading the message that CPR saves lives. Traynor and Montgomery were paddleboarding together for their first date when Montgomery suddenly collapsed on the sand in October. A videographer's camera happened to be set up to record scenery and caught what happened next on video. Traynor, an anesthesiologist, sprung into action, performing CPR before paramedics arrived to take the pulseless man to a hospital while using a defibrillator to shock his heart awake. "I wasn't thinking about anything other than taking care of him," she said. Although some may have been rattled by having to perform a life-saving procedure on a first date, Traynor said the only thing out-of-the-ordinary was the sand. "I do deal with medical emergencies all the time, but I would say what was different at this time was that I was on the beach," she told KTLA. The couple said Montgomery's heart was stopped for 17 minutes. But since being revived, his road to recovery has been more than smooth. "My heart healed from the inside out," Montgomery said. "I'm so lucky that I've been madly in love ever since." Alexander Baker, whose camera recorded the rescue said that Montgomery later thanked him for recording the couple's first kiss. "His first kiss was, they call it, the kiss of life," Baker said. Montgomery is the founder of a charity called "Paddle 4 Good." Among other endeavors, the organization works to train people in CPR.

Veteran struck by driver after altercation over littering

surveillance video shows a hit-and-run suspect strike a veteran in Gardena, and police are on the hunt for the driver. In the video, Josh Byrd is in the middle of the street when a vehicle traveling at about 30 mph appears to slam into him intentionally. It all happened Monday morning, when Byrd was walking his service dog outside his job. Byrd said prior to getting hit, he saw the man parked outside the warehouse -- his belongings piled inside his car. The man started throwing garbage outside of the vehicle when Byrd asked him to stop and put the garbage on the hood of the car. "I kindly asked the gentlemen, 'Sir, would you mind picking up the trash that you threw?' No response. He can't see me, I can't see him cause he has trash bags blocking his windows," Byrd explained. The man started yelling profanity, threw a glass container of urine and Byrd attempted to throw it back, as seen in the video. That's when the man turned around and slammed into Byrd. The Iraq War veteran received cuts and bruises all over his body. He got a fractured his wrist and five stitches in his chin. "Any other type of person would have been like, 'All right.' They would have cursed me out, threw the trash at me or whatever and just drove off and continued on with their day. Now, the Gardena police are looking for him for attempted vehicular manslaughter, which carries, 20 to 25 years in jail. This guy is facing a lot of time," Byrd said. "All this guy had to do was pick his trash up." Gardena police investigating the incident said they're looking for a green four-door compact car.

Sneaky monkey robs grocery shop in southwestern China

A sneaky monkey "robbed" a grocery shop in southwest China, causing more than lb300 in losses to the owner. The clip shows the monkey helping itself to snacks in the shop and a man trying to catch it but failing. The incident took place in Guiyang City on August 24. According to the shop owner, known locally only as Ms. Sha, three monkeys have been visiting her store daily for the last month. The monkey seen in this video was the biggest one, who not only ate snacks but also took naps in the shop. He also reportedly grabbed food from local schoolchildren on the streets. Sha reported the incidents to the police who were able to catch the monkey and take it away. The monkey has since been settled in the local wild zoo, according to reports. The status of the two other monkeys is not known.

Watch: Mexico breaks record for largest torta sandwich

Throngs of people gathered to make the world's biggest torta sandwich in Mexico City. The torta, which is a Mexican delicacy made of flatbread, weighed 865 kilograms and measured 70 meters in length. The mega sandwich set a new record for the longest sandwich of any kind made in Latin America. Thousands of flatbread pans, lettuce heads and stems of tomatoes were used for the record attempt, which took place in Venustiano Carranza. More than 60 ingredients were used in total, ranging from mayonnaise to onions. This year marks the fifteenth year in a row that Mexico has broken the Latin American record for the longest sandwich. The nation set the record at 66 metres in 2016, while breaking the world record for the largest amount of guacamole in 2017, at 3 tonnes. The tortilla record event aims to promote gastronomy and the status of the torta sandwich. A tortilla is commonly found on the menu in Mexican restaurants. Tortilla translates to "small torta".

Dutch Mohammad cartoon contest sparks protests in Pakistan

Thousands of Pakistanis yesterday demonstrated calling for the country's Dutch ambassador to be expelled over a controversial Mohammad cartoon contest. The contest is organised for later this year by anti-Islam lawmaker Geert Wilders. With an EUR8,563 prize, it invites people to submit cartoons depicting the Muslim Prophet Mohammad, an act that Islam forbids. Tehreek-e-Labbaik (TLP), a political party dedicated to the punishment of blasphemy, organised the demonstration in Pakistan. Several thousand protesters marched in the eastern city of Lahore holding a banner that said they were holding a "peaceful protest" and chanting "we will die to protect the honour of the prophet". They called for the expulsion of Dutch ambassador Ardi Stoios-Braken and demanded that new Prime Minister Imran Khan's government withdraw Pakistan's ambassador and cut diplomatic ties with the Netherlands. A similar protest held by TLP last year saw Pakistan's capital Islamabad shut down for nearly a month. It is the first challenge for Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) administration. The Dutch prime minister, Mark Rutte, distanced his government from the event and labelled it "disrespectful" but said it could go ahead on the grounds of freedom of expression. Wilders posted a cartoon on Twitter suggesting Islamic extremism has "damaged Muhammad more" than an artist with a pen. Images of the prophet are traditionally forbidden in Islam and caricatures are regarded by most Muslims as highly offensive.

These two males lions attacked a lone lioness to steal her food last week in remarkable close-up footage that reveals the brutality that exists between the predators of Africa. In the video, filmed in South Africa's Kruger National Park on August 24 during a safari, two male lions sneak up and use brute force to steal the remaining buffalo meat from a carcass from a starving lioness. "The lioness looked in a real bad neglected state and she was starving," explains the Newsflare member. "The hungry lioness enjoyed her find for not even five minutes when we suddenly saw a big male lion on a hill in the distance. He was staring straight at this female and soon started stalking her. Pinning her down, both males bit into the lioness, making their intentions very clear while leaving her totally shocked and blown away. The lioness stood no chance and quickly realized that it was better to move on while the two male lions claimed their prize. US President Donald Trump has lashed out at China for undermining its work with North Korea, as criticism over progress on denuclearisation mounts. Or was it a stupid narcissistic unplanned trump ploy from the get go. In a series of tweets he also said he saw no reason to resume the joint war games with South Korea that have angered North Korea. Days ago his own defence secretary said military exercises might continue. China has accused Mr Trump of "shifting blame" in his comments on its relations with North Korea. A summit between Mr Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in June ended with a pledge from the North to work towards "the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula". Soon after Mr Trump announced there was "no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea". But since then many observers say North Korea is not moving fast enough to dismantle its nuclear or rocket sites. Mr Trump's tweets appear to place the blame for these challenges squarely on China, but he also goes on to praise his personal ties with the leaders of both North Korea and China. The confusing blend of criticism, praise and veiled threat comes as Washington faces mounting pressure to deliver results following those unprecedented talks. Just days ago, Washington called off a trip to North Korea by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with the president arguing that insufficient progress had been made in dismantling the North's nuclear programme. Why take aim at China? In his latest comments on Twitter, Mr Trump says North Korea was "under tremendous pressure from China because of our major trade disputes with the Chinese government". Beijing is Pyongyang's only significant ally and is thought to have significant influence over its decisions. Beijing is also Washington's most powerful long-term strategic rival in the region. The US and China are locked in an increasingly tense trade battle and each side has imposed tariffs on one another's goods. Mr Trump has complained about the size of the US trade deficit with China and what Washington sees as other unfair trade practices. Despite his strong words, Mr Trump's latest tweet concluded with some optimism, saying the trade issue could be resolved by himself and China's "great President Xi Jinping". China has attacked Mr Trump's remarks as "irresponsible" and difficult to understand. "To solve the problem, it should look at itself instead of shifting blame," foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said.

Pupils at a school in Vietnam were trapped in their classrooms after a flash flood hit their village. Footage captured on Wednesday (August 28) in Son La province shows the rapid floodwaters gushing through the middle school after days of continuous heavy rain. Pupils run through the corridors and rush upstairs to avoid the water, which can be seen washing away bicycles and motorbikes. Two Men Burned Alive by Vigilantes

August 29, 2018 Acatlan, Mexico Some residents of a small town in central Mexico pulled two men accused of trying to kidnap children from police custody and burned them to death. Police in Puebla state say the men aged 53 and 21 had been detained in the township of Acatlan and taken to a local police station. A crowd of about 150 people gathered and stormed the jail, taking the men who they accused of trying to steal children. The crowd then doused them with an accelerant and burned them and their vehicle. The state police said Wednesday that local authorities had not followed established procedure to request reinforcements and negotiators. Such instances of mob killings have been increasing in central Mexico.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe collapses in Iran's Evin prison

British-Iranian national Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has had a traumatic return to Iran's Evin prison. She collapsed during a panic attack yesterday in her cell and was taken to the prison's medical centre. It was her second panic attack this week, said her husband Richard Ratcliffe. Zaghari-Ratcliffe returned to prison on Sunday after her first three-day release since she was imprisoned in 2016. She was convicted on charges of espionage, which she denies. From Friday to Sunday, she spent time with her family in Iran, including her four-year-old daughter Gabriella. Gabriella's passport was taken when her was arrested, and she has remained in Iran with family ever since. Both Zaghari-Ratcliffe and her husband had hoped and expected the furlough to be extended. "I was surprised it happened, I was elated on Friday," said Richard Ratcliffe last week. "I was on all sorts of media talking about how hopeful we were. It's very unusual for it to only be three days- every other prisoner I heard of, it's always extended."

Atlas rocket collapses on pad at Vandenberg Air Force Base, 1963

On May 11, 1963, an Atlas rocket with an Agena D upper stage was being filled with fuel on its launch pad at Vandenberg Air Force Base. During fueling, a gas bubble developed in the propellant fill and drain system for the rocket. This created a hydraulic ram effect that shook loose the connection inside the vehicle where liquid oxygen flowed into the Atlas. The launch pad crew, hunkered down in the blockhouse, drained all of the liquid oxygen in the upper tank. But with the Agena D upper stage on top of it, there was pressure from above on the tank. The tank buckled and the Agena fell over, pivoting down and hitting the ground. The lower half of the Atlas was filled with kerosene (RP-1, for "rocket propellant") which sprayed out in a flood onto the pad. By great luck, the propellant did not burst into flame, although somebody in the blockhouse must have hit a fire suppression system, because water sprayed out onto the pad area immediately after the collapse. This was released on a tape in 1989.
