Italy MEP demands Oettinger quit after saying voters will be taught

Ignazio Corrao, MEP for 5SM told the late night politics programme that comments from EU's Budget Commissioner, Gunther Oettinger, about Italy electing populists were "not acceptable". Mr Oettinger told German media, DW, the market crash following Italy's election should serve as a warning to the rest of Europe about electing populists. He appeared to suggest financial markets would force Italians to reject populist parties. According to DW journalist Bernd Thomas Riegert who interviewed the EU official, Oettinger hit out at Italian voters. The journalist wrote on Twitter: "'The markets will teach the Italians to vote for the right thing' EU commissioner Oettinger told me in an exclusive interview in Strasbourg." Mr Corrao slammed the Budget Commissioner's comments, and said: "We want to see Germany behave as a country that really cares about the countries." He accused the German of "referring to the Italian and Italian people not as a partner country, but a country that can be talked down to".
