28 mortars were just fired from Gaza at the Israeli side in recent hours as sirens blared throughout the area, amid heightened tensions along the Gaza border. At 8 a.m (local time), exactly one hour after approximately 25 mortar shells were fired at the Sha'ar Hanegev and Eshkol regions, incoming sirens were triggered for a second time in the Eshkol region. Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted the majority of the incoming mortar shells from the first barrage. However, several managed to land inside Israeli communities, one of the shells landed just outside an empty kindergarten in the Eshkol region, less than an hour before children were due to arrive. Seems this was carried out by the Islamic Jihad group, which 3 of it's members were killed couple of days ago by IDF fire, after an attempt to carry out an IED attack on the border fence. _____ Yesterday: Code Red alarm triggered after machine gun fire from Gaza hit buildings, vehicles in Sderot; Earlier: Hamas member killed by IDF fire - Several structures and vehicles in Israeli town of Sderot were hit by machinegun fire from the Gaza Strip few hours ago , which triggered a Code Red alarm in Sderot and nearby communities. The machinegun shooting came in the wake of several tense days in the border region, that saw several infiltration attempts by Palestinians followed by IDF retaliatory attacks. This was the second machine gun attack on Sderot in under two weeks. On May 16, bullets also struck a number of homes in the town. The shooting attack today came hours after a clash between IDF troops and Palestinian gunmen on the Gaza border earlier in the day - An IDF force arrested two armed Palestinians who attempted to cross the security fence in the northern Gaza Strip with the intention of carrying out an attack. The Palestinians were found with knives, bolt cutters and an flaming material on their person. While the IDF soldiers chased the two Palestinians they came under fire from Gaza. The IDF forces returned fire, killing at least one armed Palestinian, which later was indentified by Hamas as Mohammed al-Rudeia, member of the Hamas military wing.
