American history 1920s-1950s

Although the 1920s is called the "Gilded Age" life in the rural United States was extremely difficult. There was no modern housing and laundry was still washed by hand in most of the United States. Most Americans believe traditional America was conservative prior to the 1950s, but as early as the 1920s there was a Flapper subculture of women who smoked and "chorus girl" dances from this era are preserved on film. By the 1950s, modern housing had been built greatly improving the standard of living for most American families. Advertising of new products like Coca-Cola through film, and later television, continued into the modern era.
