'London's migrant population up by 200,000 since 2011'

Oxford University academics say UK has seen half a million migrant arrivals between 2011 and 2014 By Standard reporter 6 March 2015 London's migrant population is booming as the number of foreign-born residents living in the capital increased by 200,000 in three years, new research reveals. The city saw the greatest increase across England, as the country saw an influx of 565,000 migrants between 2011 and 2014. Two thirds of those migrants were born in other EU countries, academics at the University of Oxford found. The South East saw the second-highest rise of 79,000, while the smallest increase was in the North East where an extra 26,000 migrants are thought to have arrived since 2011. Researchers said the projections gave a more up-to-date picture of the migrant populations across England than the 2011 census - but they stressed that the numbers are estimates. Official estimates from the Office for National Statistics are expected in June. Madeleine Sumption, Director of the Migration Observatory, said the study was done to provide more insight ahead of the general election. She said: "These data show how different local experiences of migration have been across the UK. "There are large variations in the size of migrant populations, as well as the share that come from EU countries. "We have undertaken this analysis to provide a resource for anyone looking to understand local demographics of migration in the run-up to the general election."
