Shots fired in Virginia hospital, possibly during escape by prisoner

Manhunt underway for armed escaped prisoner at Inova Fairfax Hospital A Fairfax County hospital is on lockdown as police investigate an active shooting situation involving an escaped prisoner early Tuesday morning. There is an active shooting situation at Inova Fairfax Hospital located on Gallows Road in Falls Church, Virginia. The shooting situation began at 3 a.m. and there is a large police presence at the scene. There is no access to the hospital. Fairfax County police say Wossen Assaye, a prisoner in the custody of a private security guard, escaped from the hospital armed with a gun. Police are searching the area looking for Assaye, who is described as a black man wearing a hospital gown. He is 6 feet tall and 170 pounds, police say. He is considered armed and dangerous. Police are asking for anyone who sees a man matching the description to call them at 703-691-2131. Inside the hospital, an announcement came over the loud speaker telling patients to stay in their rooms, reports a WTOP staffer hospitalized at Inova Fairfax. Fairfax County ambulances are taking patients to other hospitals in the county. Hospital employees are to go to Falls Church High school for shuttle bus pick up. Roads around the hospital are being shut down so police can search the area. At about 5:35 a.m., police said the following roads are closed: Route 50 to Prosperity Avenue, Prosperity Avenue to Gallows Road, Gallow Road to Woodburn Road and Woodburn Road to Prosperity Avenue.
