In Montana’s Indian country, tribes take opposite sides on coal

The Crow and Northern Cheyenne tribes live just miles apart on the Powder River coal basin, but stand on opposite sides of U.S. President Donald Trump’s pro-mining and drilling agenda. Their deep philosophical and financial divide reflects the wide diversity of views about energy development among America’s roughly 500 federally recognized Native American tribes.
