Earthquake update: You want the good news or the bad news, California?

SAN FRANCISCO — Pop the Napa champagne corks, California! Your chances of experiencing a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in the next 30 years just went down


On the other hand, your chances of experiencing a massive, devastating 8.0 magnitude quake just went up. And the Bay Area's chances of suffering a serious quake just went up, while Los Angeles' chances went down.



Such is the summary of a new and far more detailed California earthquake forecast released Tuesday by the U.S. Geological Survey. The overall chance of an 8.0 quake in the next three decades rose from 4.7% to 7%, while the chance of a 6.7 quake — roughly the size of the Northridge quake in LA in 1994, and the Loma Prieta quake that hit San Francisco in 1989 — decreased by 30%.
