Failed asylum seeker, 19, is jailed for raping a 14-year-old schoolgirl

Karam Majdi has appeared at Brighton Crown Court charged with the of a 14-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl in separate attacks. He was convicted of raping his 14-year-old victim at a hostel in Croydon by a jury and was acquitted of the other attack at his flat near to Hove seafront. It took only half an hour for the jury to reach a verdict in the case. Both of the girls involved in the trial met Majdi through social media and it was told to the court that his victim had met him at least twice in person before he her. Judge Shani Barnes expressed her discontent for Majdi's obvious and apparent quest to sleep with girls using social media apps. She said "your internet activity in 2017 is of huge concern. You appeared to be trying very hard to find young women online who would have sex with you. What you did to your victim that night was opportunistic and vile. She was vulnerable because of her age and because she was already suffering from severe psychological harm. This was a severe and prolonged incident. I hope you understand the gravity of what you've done." The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had the Crown prosecution Henrietta Paget read out her victim impact statement, which according to local news outlets present at the trial read as follows, "last year I lost my dad which left me feeling devastated. I suffered another devastating incident last year, I was attacked and . No woman or person should ever have to go through something like this." "I hate him, he's a horrible person and disgusting. When I think about what he did to me, it makes me sick. I shout and scream in my sleep calling out and punching. The injuries I sustained were so bad. I can't explain the pain. I struggled to wee and it hurt to walk. Will I be able to get married and have a happy future? I'm going to have to live with this for the rest of my life." Judge Barnes said to the victim "you are very strong, and you are very brave, and you are not going to let this affect you for the rest of your life". Judge Shani Barnes described Majdi as immature and young. She said of his attitude, "You didn't care that your friend was there and despite protestations, despite her physically trying to fight you off, you her. She was trapped. Her inner and outer thighs were black and blue. She was physically crushed." She said that after serving half of his sentence he would be released on licence or deported. Majdi came to England two and a half years ago under the claim of being an unaccompanied minor from Syria. According to his defence, Majdi lost his father in the fighting in Syria but his brother and were still there. He was sent to England because it "was too dangerous for him to remain in Aleppo."
