Popular Thai beach deserted as Covid-19 hits tourism

A deserted beach is seen in Pattaya, eastern Thailand, today (August 31) as the city reels from the effect of Covid-19 of its tourism industry. The coastal resort - best known for as the 'sex capital of the world' for its nightlife industry - has seen income obliterated by the pandemic. Government chiefs have kept the country's borders closed since March 22. With no local transmissions of the virus for almost three months, they have successfully prevented the grim figures seen in neighbouring countries. However, the country's tourism reliant economy accounting for up to 20 per cent of GDP has been shattered - shrinking at its deepest pace since the 1998 Asian crisis. Footage from Pattaya - once one of the most popular destinations in Asia - shows dozens of closed bars, restaurants, nightclubs and massage parlours with 'for rent' signs as previous tenants have been forced to quit. The city's once busting beach is now eerily quiet - with rental jet skis parked idle and just a handful of locals paddling in the sea. Health officials are keen to keep the country closed until 2021 but tourism groups are pressuring ministers for gradual re-opening with 'travel bubbles' that allows holidaymakers from other Covid-free countries to visit. Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn told local media that officials were still working on re-opening plans but admitted it could be a long time. He said: ''The principle is already approved by the Prime Minister, but it will take sometime before we can execute it, evaluate it, and expand it to other regions.'' President of Association of Thai Travel Agents Vichit Prakobgosol told Khaosod English that even if the plan was immediately approved, it ''will take some time for hotels and airlines to prepare themselves''. He added: ''We also have to market it to potential tourists.'' Thailand has recorded zero foreign visitors since April when it imposed a travel ban - a staggering decline compared with 2019 when there were 39.8 million tourist arrivals. Economists believe the country will lose 1.69 trillion baht in revenues due to the travel restrictions put in place because of the pandemic.

Dozens of youngsters were seen flouting coronavirus guidelines in the Philippines by exercising on a highway bridge. Aiko Baguio Josol said she was surprised after seeing minors jogging and playing sports outdoors in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu on August 23. The shocked resident said: "I live nearby so I pass by here whenever I can to get some exercise. "People normally go there to jog but not as many as shown in my video. I just didn't expect that there would be this many people, especially minors." Aiko added that some of the youngsters playing are seen without masks nor comply with social distancing. She said: "I asked some of them to go home, but they just ignored me and continued with their games." Under the current community quarantine implemented in the area, minors are not yet allowed outside of their homes. Cebu province has been under multiple stricter lockdowns after it was regarded as a Covid-19 hotspot outside of Metro Manila where most of the early cases were reported. The number of Covid-19 cases in the Philippines has surpassed the 200,00 mark with 3,325 death toll. Its cases continue to while neighbouring countries such as Thailand and Vietnam, are on their way to recovery from the economic losses incurred by the pandemic.

Southern white rhinoceros shown off at zoo in Thailand

Excited zoo visitors welcome one of the only six southern white rhinos in Thailand after it was properly tamed and trained. The white rhino, named North, arrived at the zoo in Songkhla province on August 27. It had been aggressive but is gradually becoming used to people. Footage shows the rhino's keeper calling the great rhinoceros with a calm voice before the animal walked out of its hiding spot and greeted the people. The zoo keeper then rubbed the giant animal to say hello to the once-wild animal. The keeper said North had been aggressive before but they have taken care of it with love and understanding. He comes to the rhino every morning to spend some time together so that the animal will feel peaceful in his presence. He said: "We need to understand the animals' nature and show them how much we love and care about them. Like North, he has finally become a nice boy." White rhinos are the largest land mammal, after elephants, that can weigh up to 3 tonnes. They originated from southern Africa and has an average life expectancy of about 46 to 50 years. In Thailand, people can see three white rhinos at Khao Kheaw Open Zoo, one at Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo, two at Khon Kaen Zoo and North at Songkhla Zoo.

The husband of a woman killed after an elderly driver crashed through a Georgia emergency room has sued the hospital for not having protective barriers installed near the entrance. Fredrick Hill has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Piedmont Atlanta Hospital after Kimberly Hill, 55, was tragically killed on June 30. Kimberly and her siblings had arrived to the hospital that day in a red SUV to drop their mother off outside the emergency room entrance. Surveillance footage shows the family being assisted by hospital staff when a silver Mercedes-Benz SUV suddenly plows into the Hills' car Mary Clayton, 75, had driven herself to the Buckhead-based hospital when she lost control of her Mercedes-Benz, hit the Hills' vehicle and dangerously accelerated into the emergency room lobby. Kimberly died from the incident and four others were injured. According to Fredrick and his attorneys, Kimberly would still be alive had the hospital's emergency room entrance had been fortified with bollards.

Sheriff's deputies have released bodycam footage of the moment they fatally shot an armed man in the back while he tried to escape them in South Carolina. Michael Culbertson, a 26-year-old white man wanted for reckless driving and resisting arrest, died in the shooting by Greenville County deputies on July 11. Daycare worker, 24, is sacked for breaking up a scuffle by slapping a 5 y/o child

Tiana McElveen, 24, was arrested and charged with unlawful conduct towards a child and arrested last Thursday over her behavior at Care-A-Lot Daycare Center in Sumter County, according to court records. Video taken August 14 shows two young children fighting over a toy inside the daycare center as a woman, identified as McElveen, stands in the corner of the room watching. McElveen appears to strike one child in the face before grabbing him by the arm and throwing him onto the ground. She then picks up the same child, this time by the wrists, and roughly drops him on to the ground again. McElveen leaves the victim on the ground and pulls the other child away. Reports that McElveen was sacked from her position at Care-A-Lot Daycare Center last Friday over a separate incident involving children. Another incident report claimed McElveen became rude to staffers after they confronted her for allegedly putting food on the floor for children 'to eat like dogs.' The Department of Social Services was notified and McElveen was arrested on August 20. She was taken to Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center, but was released after paying a $1,500usd bond.

CCTV has emerged out of ChIraq,, um, Chicago showing a robber violently dragging an 85-year-old woman and slamming her to the ground to steal her purse outside a condominium along the Magnificent Mile. The cowardly attack took place just after 10.30am on Tuesday as the victim was walking with a cane toward the back entrance of her condo building in the 100 block of East Grand Avenue, which is around the corner from the main entrance in the 500 block of North Michigan Avenue, better known as the Magnificent Mile. As surveillance video from the building's parking garage shows, a man in a baseball cap carrying a plastic bag in his left hand follows the elderly woman as she approaches the door and enters. 50-meter yacht burning and sinking in the Mediterranean Sea off Italy's Sardinia coast

The Italian coast guard Wednesday released dramatic video of a 50-meter yacht burning and sinking in the Mediterranean Sea off Italy's Sardinia coast. Coast guard officials said they rescued 17 people from the burning Lady MM yacht, which left a huge plume of smoke behind as it disappeared beneath the surface Tuesday. The Italian news agency, ANSA, reports the yacht caught fire about 96 kilometers from Capo Comino, on Sardinia's northeast coast. The news service reports the coast guard received the ship's distress signal and dispatched two boats and a helicopter to the scene. The 17 people on board, which included eight tourists from Kazakhstan and nine crew members, had already abandoned the ship and were in a smaller boat when the coast guard arrived. One of the coast guard ships took the crew and tourists to the community of Siniscola on Sardinia. There were no reports of injuries. The coast guard is investigating the cause of the accident.

Sonoma County sheriff releases bodycam video from fatal altercation

A Sacramento man who died a couple of weeks ago after being tased multiple times during a scuffle with Sonoma County sheriff's deputies struggled with them for three minutes, until being handcuffed and his body fell limp. Donald Timothy Miller, 49, died at the scene of the Aug. 15 altercation outside a business in Guerneville, where he and his wife had stopped en route to a hospital because of a mental breakdown he was having, Miller's family told the Santa Rosa Police Department, which is investigating the matter. Sonoma County Sheriff's Office this week released video of the altercation taken by body-worn cameras of deputies Bryan Jensen and Michael Matelli. The Sheriff's Office is conducting an internal review to determine if the deputies followed department policies. They were placed on standard leave.

Diving a remote, abandoned pier.

The Gaviota pier was a municipal pier that use to aid boating operations out near Point Conception in Southern California. The piers no longer in use because storms have made it structurally compromised. No fishing or even walking on it has made it a de facto pelican roost and a bountiful artificial reef. (the nutrients literally rains from above) Honestly stunned with how much fish were surrounding this structure and how much kelp was growing out off the end. No gold rings or amulets sunken down there but probably some incredible fishing that might happen.

According to report, a 22-year-old man was shot on Lozells Road just after 12:30 and died a short time after arriving at a hospital. Bodycam video shows shootout at Tucson trailer park

A 34-year-old man armed with two guns fired at Tucson police officers numerous times near Benson Highway and Country Club Road on Aug. 22, 2020. He was shot three times by an officer and is recovering at a Tucson hospital. The incident began shortly before 11 a.m. when officers were directed to a mobile home complex in the 3100 block of East Behan Street, near East Benson Highway and South Country Club Road, the possible location of a stolen vehicle, police said. Officers had seen the SUV earlier in the day but its driver fled an attempted traffic stop, police said. The first officer to arrive at the scene, Calderon, saw four people in the vehicle, which was reported stolen from a rental car business and had a GPS tracking device. All four people inside the vehicle got out and ran. A man who got out of the vehicle, later identified as Magnus Valenzuela, fired at Calderon before running into the nearby mobile home complex, police said. The man fired at Calderon again and the officer returned fire. The shooter kept running through the complex, then he pointed his guns at Jahnke - who was warned by Calderon that Valenzuela was approaching him from behind - and Jahnke fired at the shooter, striking him multiple times, police said. Valenzuela was armed with an AR .22 caliber pistol and a .40 caliber handgun, police said. Jahnke, a seven-year veteran of the department, and Calderon, a two-year veteran of the department, were the only two officers who fired their weapon. Three of the four people in the vehicle were detained, but no charges are expected to be filed against them, police said. A fourth person eluded capture.

Captain Crunch: Wausau Boater Forgets the Trailer & Truck

Wausau, WI: Bystander video captured 49-year-old Joel Kleiber speeding across Lake Wausau and ramming his watercraft on to a boat ramp at D.C. Everest Park, 1800 S. Third Ave., on Sunday afternoon. On lookers said Kleiber staggered through a deck littered with empties, showed "no emotional reaction to the incident" and "implied he did it on purpose" because he said "I was parking my boat." When confronted by a bystander, Kleiber allegedly grabbed his red, wheeled cooler and took off on foot. Kleiber was arrested at his home Monday evening and taken to Marathon County Jail. He is facing charges of second-degree recklessly endangering safety and disorderly conduct in the crash. Kleiber faces additional charges of disorderly conduct-domestic abuse and criminal damage to property, in a separate case also filed on Tuesday. Surprisingly, Police say they recognized Kleiber from past contacts with him.

Calls for a Round Lake Beach police officer to be removed from active duty after he was captured on camera Saturday punching a woman in the head three times while she was on a gurney. The confrontation happened Saturday evening after Round Lake Beach police responded to a 911 call requesting assistance because a woman was experiencing a mental health crisis, the department's statement said Saturday. "Did you tape the part where she bit me in the leg?" he says in a second video taken by the same person. "See the bite mark?" he says later, turning his leg and pointing near his , still covered by his uniform. In a close up of the video, you can see the woman is clearly biting the officer. 3 Prince George's County police officers shot

LANDOVER, Md. - Three Prince George's County police officers were shot within seconds of arriving at a home invasion call, the interim police chief said. County police said officers were called at 6:35 p.m. Sunday to the 1300 block of Capital View Terrace. Interim Police Chief Hector Velez said there was a legitimate call for service, a home invasion, but that the officers came under fire within seconds after arriving at the scene. "They were ambushed," Velez said. Police said officers returned fire, and two men are in custody. They were not struck. "This evening, I received a call that three of my officers were shot. My heart sank," Velez said. "This is the call you hope you never get, and we were just so shaken tonight to have gotten the call that three of our officers had been shot," Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said. "All three of these officers are nothing short of heroes." The officers were taken to the hospital for treatment. "They're going to be fine ... They are in good spirits. They are concerned about each other. They expressed concern for the person that they were responding to for the call for service," Velez said. "At this point, they suffered various degrees of injuries, and fortunately, we were able to apprehend two individuals." The chief said the officers provided care to each other. "Because of the self-care they provided to each other, they were able to be transported to Prince George's Hospital Center, where they are receiving excellent care," Velez said. The chief said the officers suffered various degrees of injuries: one who was struck in the chest was saved by his vest and suffered arm and leg injuries. A second officer who was shot in the back was saved by his vest. A third officer suffered an injured foot. "These officers are your officers. These officers are coming to work to protect, defend the residents of Prince George's County. This evening, these heroes did just that," Velez said. "I want to ask our community tonight to keep all of these officers in your prayers, please keep their families in your prayers, keep this entire department in your prayers," Alsobrooks said.

Majority of GOP believe US death toll of 170,000 is 'acceptable', poll finds

A majority of Republicans surveyed in a national poll believe the number of deaths from the coronavirus is "acceptable," and hold positive views of the US response to the pandemic. The new poll showed a significant partisan divide over how each party sees the health emergency, which is killing some 1,000 Americans every day. Fifty-seven percent of Republicans surveyed agreed with the statement that the number of coronavirus deaths in the US - which this week reached over 176,000 - was "acceptable." Conversely, 90 percent of Democrats said the number of deaths was unacceptable, as did 67 percent of independents. Biden says he would shut the country down again to stop Covid-19 The poll was carried out by YouGov on behalf of CBS News, using a representative sample of 2,226 registered voters interviewed between August 19-21, 2020.
