Residents in a Leeds village save Christmas

2 women brought hundreds of smiles to children in a Leeds village this week, by bringing Santa to their homes. Donna Newton & Alex Smith both from Swillington, organised a Santa Walk around the village to cheer up the kids after a tough year due to Covid 19 & lockdown restrictions. The idea came from Ms Newton as she was doing her ironing one day and her friend Mrs Smith helped organise the event. They posted on the Swillington Community Facebook page asking if anyone would be interested in their kids seeing Santa outside their homes. The community were then asked to buy their own children a selection box , wrap it up and deliver it to Donna & Alex to put in quarantine ready for Santa to deliver it back to them. A professional photographer 'Yorkshire Pics' was also on hand to take photos of every child who was visited and a free photo sent back to them. Local window cleaner David Waldron also from Swillington, stepped in to play Santa, while his wife Donna Waldron also volunteered & dressed as Mrs Claus to help deliver presents to over 400 children in over 200 households over 7 nights. Donations were collected during the Santa Walk which has raised lb1300.00 for St Mary's Church in Swillington. Other local Elves from the community also helped deliver the parcels. Special visits were also made to children recovering from brain surgery, suffering from Down Syndrome & Cerebral Palsy.
