If the Three Gorges Dam fails, 400 million Chinese are downstream close to the embankments. This would destroy crops, factories, homes and the big loss would bet the 22.5 GW the dam produces in electricity. This is the equivalent of 22 average nuclear plants. Power would be lost in most areas. When the dam was built, they did not anchor the bottom of the dam to the bedrock (common practice) to prevent failure. Poor concrete, steel and other materials were used to save money so the pockets of the Party members could be filled. When the dam opened they said it would endure a 10,000 year flood event, soon after it was lowered to 1,000 years then recently 100 years, now they are just hoping it will not fail in the coming days.
