Austin police release video footage of Michael Ramos shooting

Long-awaited video on Monday provided a clearer picture of a deadly Austin police shooting that has become a flashpoint in the community's relationship with law enforcement and the inspiration for a series of protests this year. After missing its own June deadline, police on Monday finally released dashboard and body camera video that shows what happened before an officer shot and killed Michael Ramos in a Southeast Austin apartment parking lot in April. Ramos' death sparked community outrage earlier this year when bystander video circulated online showed police firing a beanbag round at him with his arms raised above his head. The newly available police video, which also includes text descriptions of the incident and the conversation from the 911 call that led to the shooting, marks the first time the Austin Police Department has released footage of a police shooting before the Travis County district attorney has taken or has declined to take the officer's case before a grand jury. The night of April 24, around 6:30 p.m., an unidentified 911 caller summoned police to the complex, saying people in a car were either using or making drugs. The newly released audio of the 911 call reveals that the caller also said a man had a gun to a woman's head.
