Suspect charged in Oakland robbery caught on video

A man on parole for carjacking was charged Wednesday in a violent Oakland robbery that was captured on video surveillance. Latif Malik 23, of Oakland, was charged in the armed robbery Feb. 10 of a 20-year-old man as he washed his car in the 2000 block of Damuth Street in the Dimond district. The victim lost a cell phone and gold chains. Malik was arrested around 1:45 a.m. Feb. 14 in Merced after California Highway Patrol officers responding to a statewide alert by investigators stopped a suspicious Audi A6. He has admitted his involvement in the robbery, authorities said. He is charged with second-degree robbery and the enhancement allegation that it was committed while he was on parole. An accomplice in the Oakland robbery is still being sought. Malik is also a suspect in a second armed robbery Feb. 10 on San Pablo Avenue in Richmond and possibly others, authorities said. Richmond police did not immediately return a call Wednesday asking about case updates. In video surveillance of both the Oakland and Richmond robberies, Malik has a beard and long dreadlocks. According to authorities, he cut his hair and beard and made plans to leave the state before he was captured. According to court records, Malik is on parole after being sent to prison following a conviction in August 2014 for carjacking. He is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.
