A surveillance video released Friday shows sheriff's deputies didn't check on Pamela Riddick for more than an hour the morning she died at the Portsmouth City Jail. The three-hour recording bolsters a state investigator's report that determined deputies didn't make proper rounds - failing to check on her for an hour and 24 minutes. A state standard requires a minimum of two inspections an hour. The same investigation found jail staff falsified logs after the deaths of Riddick and another inmate early this year to make it appear they'd been checked on more often. On Friday morning, Riddick's family released the video . In a statement, family spokeswoman Kimberly Wimbish said the video "totally contradict(s) the official statements of the Portsmouth Sheriff's Office under former Sheriff Bill Watson." Riddick died Aug. 23, 2017, less than 48 hours after she was arrested. According to the Medical Examiner's Office, the 56-year-old died of fentanyl toxicity, "with recent cocaine intoxication contributing." A friend incarcerated next to her, Leslie Newman, said last year that she called for help for "at least 30 to 45 minutes" when she noticed Riddick was unresponsive that morning, but no one came. Newman said she also waved a towel through the bars of her cell.
