Bodycam released of police officer shooting dog

Officials have released bodycam footage of a police officer shooting a dog, which police say was aggressive, in the backyard of a home in Harvard Friday afternoon. The Harvard Police Department and McHenry County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call around 2:10 p.m. Friday about a person who pointed a gun at someone in the 600 block of Driftwood Lane. Responding officers located the suspect vehicle around 2:15 p.m. parked in the driveway of a home in the 200 block of East Metzen Street. Two minutes later, an officer yelled, "shots fired, shots fired, dog attacking me" into the radio. "After officers responded, an unleashed canine in the unsecured backyard of that residence aggressively charged at an officer. The officer fired one shot and struck the canine," Harvard Police Chief Mark Krause said. The City of Harvard released edited bodycam footage Tuesday of the shooting, which shows a police officer walking to the backyard of the home as a dog is seen running towards the officer. The officer then fires one shot, striking the dog in the neck. Krause told the Northwest Herald that the officer involved will not face any consequences from the department. 20-year-old Daniel G. Perez, who owns the dog and lives at the home seen in the video, was taken into custody a short time later after the dog was shot. Police said he was the suspect involved in the incident on Driftwood Lane that police officers were investigating. Perez was released but arrested Monday evening on a warrant for aggravated assault. He was also cited for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of cannabis under city ordinance. He was released after posting $100 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on November 20. A GoFundMe started for Perez's dog, named Stella, has raised almost $500. She continues to be treated at an animal hospital and is expected to survive.
