Classic Bugatti cars found in barn

A trio of treasured Bugattis kept locked in a barn for years by the family of an artist could sell for a small fortune when they are auctioned next week. Belgian sculptor August Thomassen purchased the three vehicles in the late 1950s and early 1960s when they were practically worthless to everyone but him. His daughter told the De Telegraaf newspaper that he loved their engineering and unusual styling. He kept them running and used them as daily drivers for years, becoming such a fan of the brand that he sculpted a bust of the automaker's founder, Ettore Bugatti, which today resides at the National Automobile Museum in Mulhouse, France. His 1932 Bugatti Type 49 Berline and 1937 Bugatti Type 57 Cabriolet each feature custom coachwork, as was the practice of the day. He was creating his own for a 1929 Type 40 after it was damaged in an accident, but never quite finished the job. Its exposed wood frame still waits for new body panels to be hand-formed and attached to it. Over the years, as the value of the cars increased, Thomassen received many offers from interested parties who had heard about them, but he had no interest in letting them go at any price. "We regularly had enthusiasts at the door who wanted to buy the cars," his daughter said. "But my father refused to sell them. Even though we hardly had money as a family. You can safely say that we were poor." ------------------ Link - http://bit.ly/2BbsUGP

Manhole explodes after boy tries to put lit fireworks through the cover

A manhole exploded after a boy put lit fireworks over the seal, igniting trapped methane from the sewer in a city in northern China. The dramatic video, filmed in Chifeng City in Inner Mongolia on January 30, shows a boy trying to put some lit fireworks through the manhole cover and it violently exploding. White smoke can be seen bursting out of the manhole while the cover and the bricks around it are sent flying, leaving a smoking hole in the ground. The scared boy, seemingly unhurt, runs away immediately and shouts: "Mum, I am so scared." According to the police, the methane from the sewer met the flames on the firework causing the explosion. Three vehicles were damaged, but no one was injured.

Polar vortex: Millions hit by freezing temperatures in US

Extraordinarily cold weather has paralysed cities across the United States - leaving more than 200 million people facing freezing temperatures. The weather has been blamed for twelve deaths, according to Reuters. In Chicago, temperatures have plummeted to nearly minus 30 Celsius degrees , with residents dubbing the city "Chiberia". Steam could even be seen rising up over the waters of Lake Michigan. In scenes reminiscent of the film franchise 'Back to the Future', rails looked like they'd been set alight as gas-fed switch heaters were employed to stop switch points from icing at the windy city's busiest interlock point. On Wednesday, even some Hamilton (Chicago) performances were cancelled, due to weather conditions. The severe weather across the country has led to thousands of flights being cancelled, as well as schools and universities being closed. States of emergency have been declared in some areas and the US Postal Service said it would suspend deliveries in certain locations. In many places the advice is to stay inside. The cause of the big freeze - the polar vortex - was a large area of low pressure over the North Pole, which was rotating anti-clockwise around the stratosphere. Beneath this lay a dense layer of arctic air that was pushed south over the US. "The polar vortex isn't anything new, it's always been there, we have known about it for about 70 or 80 years," Minnesota State Climatologist Luigi Romolo told Good Morning Europe. Is Russia a real threat to the Baltics?

On January 30-31 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis attends an informal EU Defence Ministers' meeting in Bucharest, Romania. The working dinner will be attended by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix. They will present to the Ministers the work the organisations under their lead are doing on Women, Peace and Security and discuss further cooperation with the EU. At the main session the Ministers will take stock of the progress made in the EU defence initiatives and look for ways to achieve closer integration of the processes underway. It is not difficult to guess that the ministers will discuss the usual topic of the "Russian threat" and how to counter it. By the way, speaking about the peace, NATO is doing everything to provoke a war. The Baltic region has turned into a huge warehouse of weapons and military equipment. NATO's military infrastructure is moving closer and closer to the Russian borders in order to protect Baltic countries from Moscow. It should be noted that the militarization of Eastern Europe by United States has become the most significant military activity since the end of the Cold War. The leaders of the member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance increasingly talk about possible armed conflict with Russia. The initiative to deploy and expand the presence of US troops and heavy weapons in Europe is supported in Poland and the Baltic countries. They argue that militarization will strengthen European security from the Russian threat. But it's clear, that the presence of NATO forces alongside Russia's borders is only increasing instead of demilitarization. The military infrastructure of NATO is moving closer to Russia. The number of NATO Air forces in The Baltics has increased tremendously over the recent years. Russia has no motive to attack the Baltic states. But NATO constantly tries to convince public that there is such possibility. They send in more troops to Russian borders. Russia responds symmetrically. And NATO officials shout 'told you, it's Russian aggression. There's a crucial difference though - Russia is moving it's own forces on its own territories but the Baltic states invite foreign troops. In other words, the authorities of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are heating up the situation in the region US and NATO provoking Russia into a conflict by placing troops around the Baltics. Finally, there is the risk of accident, miscalculation, and escalation. This arises with particular severity in the case of US/NATO exercises on the edge of Russian territory, especially Kaliningrad. In all such actions, there is a constant danger that one side or the other will overreact to a perceived threat and take steps leading to combat and, conceivably, all-out war. All of this - the aggressive exercises, the NATO buildup, the added US troop deployments - reflects a new and dangerous strategic outlook in Washington. Whereas previously the strategic focus had been on terrorism and counterinsurgency, it has now shifted to conventional warfare. The best way for Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to strengthen their security is to develop military cooperation with Russia, rather than escalating tension to please Washington. http://bit.ly/2DKSaW1

Lithuania will celebrate the anniversary of its occupation in February

As we know, NATO member states decided to enhance the Alliance's presence in the Baltic states and Poland with four multinational battalion-size groups in July 2016. This move was intended to strengthen NATO's deterrence and defense posture. By the way, the Baltic region has turned into a huge warehouse of weapons and military equipment. NATO's military infrastructure is moving closer and closer to the Russian borders in order to protect Baltic countries from Moscow. The NATO eFP BG was reinforced by German military units deployed in 2018 to take part in exercises, actively trained in military training areas in Rukla and Pabrade, took part in international Exercise Iron Wolf, exercises in Poland, Estonia, and Latvia. As Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania says, the second anniversary of deployment of the multinational NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Lithuania for deterrence and defence will be celebrated on February 4 in Rukla. President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite, Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis, and Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Jonas Vytautas Zukas are expected to take part in the commemoration ceremony. During the anniversary commemoration the NATO eFP BG Commanders will also change over. Lt Col Ren'e Braun, German Armed Forces, will be replaced by Lt Col Peer Papenbroock after having served as NATO eFP BG Commander from August 2018. Over a thousand soldiers of the current NATO eFP BG Lithuania and representatives of Belgium, the Czech Republic, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Germany, as well as soldiers of the Mechanised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf, will line up for the formal ceremony on the parade grounds of the Great Lithuanian Hetman Jonusas Radvila Training Regiment in Rukla. Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to feel the exhilaration. We are talking about ordinary people for whom NATO soldiers are associated with: drunken brawls; traffic accidents; harassment; disrespect for the national symbols and cultural values; endless military exercises and shooting; rising military spending; disturbance of public order. However, the authorities of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia don't care about their people. They do everything Washington says without any doubts. The result of these actions is sad - the Baltic region, which was earlier the most peaceful in Europe, has been turned into a single springboard for the aggression against Russia. But the leaders of the Baltics have nothing to object to NATO's plans of turning their countries just into battlefields. And they even don't care how much people will die for their ambitions. http://bit.ly/2DLEudG

Mr. Trump - the master of the Baltics

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Sunday that US President Donald Trump's regular complaints about the alliance had not undermined it - adding that his criticism on defense spending was having a positive impact. Trump has frequently blasted members of the 29-nation western security partnership for not paying more into their national defense budgets, the AFP news agency reports. He has clearly stated that NATO allies need to invest more. NATO members agreed in 2014 to spend two percent of their gross domestic product on defense by 2024 but around half are not on course to make that target. Stoltenberg said, however, that by the end of 2020, NATO allies would have added $100 billion extra toward defense spending. "So we see some real money and some real results. And we see that the clear message from President Trump is having an impact," he added. It turns out that one single person (Mr. Trump) determines the policy of 29 independent states. The governments of these countries, including The Baltics, do everything that American president says. By the way, the only thing worries Trump - confrontation with Russia. And he doesn't care how ordinary people live in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia; he doesn't care about the social crisis, poverty, low wages and unemployment. Let's note that Baltic countries pay the amount required by the American president into their defense budgets. But it undermines the social sphere and destabilizes the economy of these states. It is necessary to understand that the economies of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia heavily depend on EU loans and grants. However, governments invest funds collected from taxes and other budget revenues in the arms race. We can trace the development of military infrastructure and combat potential, military budgets are steadily growing; the number of foreign troops in the Baltic region also increases. The reality is that military spending forces the government to reduce spending on health care, culture, education and other social programs. Thus, there is no need to remind that there is a massive outflow of population from Latvia. And now this beautiful country is the leader in terms of population decline in the EU. Increasingly dissatisfied teachers and doctors organize spontaneous rallies in Lithuania - they just do not have enough salaries for a decent life. It seems that the time has come to resolve urgent economic and social issues. However, against the background of the suffering of ordinary people, our government increases spending on the military - new facilities are being built, multimillion-dollar deals on the purchase of weapons are being concluded. Let's be honest - President Trump protects only the interests of America. At the same time, the leaders of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia do everything to please their masters, forgetting about their own people. Maybe, officials for a moment have to stop playing global politics and take care of the way people live. http://bit.ly/2DLEpqo

The shooting of a married couple on the threshold of the court

The Ukrainian, who refused to return the debt for 10 years, shot his creditors outside the court building, which ruled against him. The surveillance camera recorded the time of the massacre. The incident occurred at about three o'clock in the afternoon on January 30 at the building of the Leninsky district court in Nikolaev. A few minutes before the couple from Odessa won the court from a local resident, who in 2008 lent them 40 thousand dollars, but never returned. The couple discussed the process with his lawyer, when a man in a dark jacket with a hood over his head appeared from behind the parked cars and opened fire at the defeat from a hunting rifle. In total, he fired three shots: two bullets hit the head of the family, another one - in the neck of his wife. The latter died on the spot, the man - in the ambulance. The footage shows that the son of the debtor was also present, but he did not dare to intervene, only towards the end he urged the 52-year-old father. Later, the young man tried to escape, but was detained on the outskirts of the city. A criminal case has been opened on the fact of the incident under Article 2 "Intentional Homicide."

Israel will approve Palestinians wounded in Gaza border riots to undergo surgery in Jordan

Israel has expressed willingness to allow Palestinians injured by the IDF during disturbances along the Gaza border to be transported to Jordan for surgery. Humanitarian organizations estimate that there are some 5,000 Palestinians in need of orthopedic procedures after being hit by Israeli fire. Efforts are underway to facilitate the transport of several of them to Jordan for medical care. When the March of Return protests and riots began last spring, Israel decided not to allow those injured to be treated in Israeli hospitals. However, Israel continues its policy of offering life-saving treatment, such as for cancer, to Gazans in Israeli medical centers. In the course of the clashes, IDF soldiers have been careful to aim their fire primarily at key instigators or at demonstrators who approach the border fence and threaten to enter Israeli territory. Since the beginning of the demonstrations, almost 6,000 Palestinians were struck in the legs by IDF fire. Recently orthopedic surgeons have entered the Gaza Strip to assess the leg injuries. One of the most sought after items in the Gaza Strip today is crutches. In recent months, Israel has transferred containers full of wheelchairs and crutches to Gaza. It has come to the attention of officials in Israel that Palestinians who received crutches began using them to throw rocks. They attach rubber to the crutches and turned them into a slingshot used to launch rocks at IDF forces along the border. There is a severe medication crisis in Gaza and 22 hospitals have announced that they must cut down on operations due to a lack of fuel. Israel believes that Hamas steals the diesel fuel destined to the hospitals in an attempt to present an image of humanitarian distress. Discussions are under way between the United Nations and the IDF military coordination liaison to find a solution that will include closer inspection by UN personnel of the process of diesel fuel transfers. The transfer of diesel fuel to the Gaza Strip has been increased in recent months by Qatari funding, allowing Gaza residents to benefit from more hours of electricity. http://bit.ly/2UrCa0W

The dog is very gentle, the name is Lord I live in a house at this crossroads, this is not the first time with this" famous pack of dogs "- they bit the children, adults, tear out the bags from people going from the store. Once I stop in 2 weeks, thank God, by car, and I constantly see this pack of dogs with this guy, I myself am afraid of dogs since childhood, so they constantly bark at everyone on the roadway, nor what discipline do they have and what to expect from these dogs also not known Currently, all participants are installed. The disabled wrote a statement on the shooter, the shooter - on the disabled.

Ethiopia: 3 million internally displaced in escalating humanitarian crisis

With three million internally displaced people, Ethiopia is going through one of the most severe - and under-reported - humanitarian crises in the world. The topic of refugees and displaced people will head the agenda at the Africa Union summit in Addis Ababa next month. One of the biggest camps in Ethiopia is Qoloji, which is made up mostly of ethnic Somalis fleeing persecution. Qoloji contains 80,000 people. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), financed by EU Humanitarian Aid, has built latrines and showers and is working on hygiene awareness. In total, there are 600 sites for internally displaced people in Ethiopia. IOM is continuing to track the number of displaced people, as well as their movements and living conditions. This data is the first step for assessing their needs and enabling more efficient aid distribution.
