Russia and Turkey to coordinate action "to root out terrorism" in Syria

Russia and Turkey say they will work together to "root out" the threat of terrorism from Syria, in view of the United States's planned withdrawal from the region. The joint stance was announced at an emergency meeting in Moscow of foreign and defence ministers from the two countries, which was called to discuss the Syrian situation. "An understanding was reached," said Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, "On how military representatives of Russia and Turkey will coordinate on the ground with a view to finally rooting out terrorist threats in Syria." Turkish troops have been amassing around the northern town of Manbij - which has been held by Kurdish groups that Istanbul see as terrorist organisations. The Kurds have called for support from the Syrian army in view of the power vacuum that's likely to be left by the planned US withdrawal.
