America's B1 Lancer vs Russia's TU 160 Blackjack - Which is better?

America's B1 Lancer and Russia's T-U 160 blackjack are two of the world's deadliest aircraft. These rare beasts are enormously expensive and not every country is able to afford them. We thought it would be cool to compare these aircraft operating in two most powerful air forces of the world, the United States and Russia. Let's take a closer look at these giants of the air in this video the America's B1 Lancer and Russia's T-U 160 blackjack. 1. Specifications Let's have a look at some specs first. The B1 was first introduced in 1985. 100 B1 have been built so far with per unit cost of $ 430 m. Operated by crew of 4 the Aircraft's empty weight is 192,000 lb and maximum take-off weight is 477,000 pounds. The jet is powered by 4 General Electric engines producing around 123,000 pounds of thrust. The aircraft's top speed is 830 mph with maximum range of 5,900 miles. The combat radius of the jet is 3,444 miles with weapons payload capacity around 134,000 lb. On the other hand, the T-U 160 blackjack was first rolled out in 1987. The Russian Air force has 36 black-jack in service. At present per unit cost of the latest variant is around $300M. It holds a crew of 4 people. The aircraft comes in at weight of 242,505 lb with maximum take-off load around 606,260 pounds. The Jet is powered by 4 turbofan engines generating around 220,000 pounds of thrust. The jet can reach at top speed of 1,380 mph with maximum range of 7,643 miles. The combat radius of the jet is 4,536 miles with weapons payload capacity around 100,000 lb. 2. Mission Sets The B-1 Lancer and T-U-160 look visually similar and even share some overlap in their mission sets. However the two jets are quite different... Conclusion Both strategic combat aircraft are similar in appearance but belong to different class of combat aircraft; T-U 160 primary role being a strategic missile carrier, while B1 has the ability to penetrate highly contested airspace by using a combination of speed, terrain masking and reduced RCS.
