Driver four times over legal limit cause crash

Derby police said a driver who crashed his car into a parked car, forcing that car into the doors of the Griffin Hospital Emergency Room was four times over the legal limit. Police said the driver, 51-year-old Stewart Paskiewich of Waterbury, was driving along Division Street around 2 a.m. June 1, 2018. Paskiewich lost control of his vehicle which collided with an unoccupied car in the parking lot of the hospital. That car was hit with such forced that it was pushed into the doors of the hospital. Paskiewich was treated for minor injures at the time. Derby police said Paskiewich turned himself in on a warrant on Wednesday, December 26th. According to police, a breathalyzer given to Paskiewich shortly after the crash registered at blood alcohol content of .365, more than four times the legal limit of .08. Paskiewich was charged with driving under the influence and released on bond. He is due in court on January 3, 2019.

Migrant kids allegedly pushed, dragged at Arizona shelter

Criminal charges are being considered in the wake of surveillance videos showing workers at a shelter for migrant kids dragging and pushing at least three children. The shelter is now closed and was operated by Southwest Key, the nation's largest provider of migrant children shelters. First reported by The Arizona Republic, the video has been blurred in case some viewers find it disturbing. The video shows incidents that happened in mid-September. At least three migrant children were allegedly dragged and pushed by staffers. Southwest Key did report the incidents to local law enforcement, and after an investigation, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office concluded they would not bring forward criminal charges. Now, Maricopa County Attorney's Office said they were going to recommend alleged child abuse charges to this case. "Maricopa County Sheriff's Office executive command has made the decision to submit the case to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for its review and determination of criminal charges," the office said. The shelter, Hacienda Del Sol, has been suspended by the federal government.

Merkel vows greater international role for Germany in 2019

Chancellor Angela Merkel will begin this evening's New Year address with an apology to German citizens for the political chaos her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and their coalition partners, the Social Democrats, put the country through in 2018. But her speech is also directed at a global audience, as she outlines a greater international role for Germany in 2019: "My guiding belief is that we will only master the challenges of our time if we stick together and collaborate with others across borders," Merkel says in excerpts of the address released on Monday (December 31) morning. "Certainties of international cooperation are coming under pressure. In such a situation we have to stand up for our convictions more strongly, we have to argue, to fight. In our own interest, we must assume more responsibility." Starting tomorrow, Germany begins a two-year term on the UN Security Council where Merkel vowed to "work for global solutions." She also committed to making the European Union "more robust and decisive" and said Berlin would maintain close ties with London after the UK leaves the EU in March, if indeed they do. Domestically, the Chancellor finishes the year with her own political position considerably diminished after she was forced to step down as CDU party leader and promise not to seek re-election at the end of her term in 2021. Amid the growing success of populist movements in Europe and abroad, Merkel has remained a staunch defender of international cooperation and multilateralism. Her 2015 decision to open Germany's borders to thousands of refugees continues to cost her support at home. Nonetheless, Merkel reiterated her commitment to her policies and values of openness, tolerance and respect: "These values have made our country strong, we must work together for them, even if it is uncomfortable and exhausting." Chancellor Merkel's speech will be broadcast in full on Monday evening.

At least four dead in Russia building collapse

President Vladimir Putin arrived at the site of a collapsed residential building, which killed at least four people and injured several others in the Russian city of Magnitogorsk on Monday. Dozens are still unaccounted for. Russia's emergencies ministry told news agencies the explosion could have been caused by a gas leak. The blast rocked the apartment complex at around 4 a.m. local time, completely collapsing one of its sections. Local officials said four survivors, including a child, were rescued from the rubble and taken to a hospital. Media outlets in the city, located 1,700 km (1,050 miles) east of Moscow in the southern Urals, said it was unclear how many people were trapped in the debris, but cries for help could be heard from beneath the rubble. Citing the emergencies ministry, RIA news agency said 110 people lived in the building, and 48 apartments had been damaged. Just 52 people out of the 120 people who lived in the collapsed block had been accounted for, Russian news agency TASS reported on Monday, quoting regional Gov. Boris Dubrovsky.

Children's remains discovered in mass grave in Iraq

Police in Iraq say they have identified a mass grave containing what they believe are the remains of victims of Islamic state militant executions, including those of children. They said the site was discovered nine days ago by shepherds outside al-Daghila village between the towns of Hawija and Riyad in Kirkuk province in the north of the country. Federal police are guarding the site until the arrival of exhumation teams and experts from Baghdad. Authorities believe the grave contains the remains of tens of bodies based on the number of clothes and blankets buried in the area. Most are still buried under the soil, but some bones and skulls have emerged after heavy rainfall in the area in the past two weeks. Locals from al-Daghila village said that they witnessed some of the executions being committed by Islamic State group members because it was on their way to the village. "Our area, our village is by the dam, and this is our road passing from there," said resident Adday Hamid Abd. "On our way, we were seeing them while they were killing them. They (the victims) were dressed in red suits, we could see them, it was clear." Tucked away inside the forests of Hawija, the site was used by Islamic State group fighters as a military training camp. In addition to the mass grave, the site includes a shooting range, bunkers, trenches, and caravans. Hawija fell under the Islamic State group control in June 2014, and the Iraqi security forces managed to retake the city on 10 October 2017.

Outgoing White House chief of staff contradicts Trump on immigration

Jordan insists it respects peace deal, after minister walks on Israeli flag

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry on Sunday insisted that despite a recent incident in which the government spokeswoman and minister Jumana Ghneimat was photographed walking over an Israeli flag, the government is committed to the peace agreement it has with Israel. Jordan Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Qatarneh reaffirmed "the (Jordanian) government's respect for the peace treaty with Israel," adding that the flag incident was being dealt with via diplomatic channels. He said Jordan had told Israeli officials that the trade union building where Ghneimat had stepped on the flag was private property and that she entered via the main entrance to attend an official meeting. The response came after the Israeli Foreign Ministry protested to the Jordanian government over the incident last week at the Jordanian Professional Associations Complex in Amman. Footprints were also printed on the flag, which was displayed at the entrance to the complex. The image of the flag had been affixed to the floor for several years to protest Jordan's normalized ties with the state of Israel, union officials said. Ghunaimat, who is also the media and communications minister, was praised on social media for stepping on the flag as she arrived for the meeting. Media reports did not specify whether other ministers and senior officials had stepped on the flag or chosen to enter the building through the side entrance. Israel called a senior diplomat in the Jordanian Embassy in Tel Aviv in for clarifications on Sunday, the Foreign Ministry said. ******************************** Israel and Jordan signed a peace agreement in 1994, but relations have often been frosty amid differences over Israeli policies in Jerusalem, where Jordan is custodian over Muslim sites. After NYT report, IDF is probing the killing of Gazan medic in June

The Israeli military on Sunday responded to a New York Times report that questioned its use of live fire in an incident along the Gaza border on June 1, in which Razan al-Najjar, a female Palestinian medic, was killed when a soldier fired into a crowd of rioters. The NYT report claims this was a possible war crime. The IDF said the army's internal investigations body is "probing to clarify the reasons behind the death of Razan al-Najjar. The results of the investigation will be sent to the military advocate general upon their completion." For its investigation, The Times analyzed over 1,000 photographs and videos of the incident, interviewed over 30 eyewitnesses, spoke to Israeli and Palestinian officials and ballistics experts, and worked with the Israeli-run company Forensic Architecture to build a 3D rendering of the shooting, which also integrated drone and cellphone footage. "The bullet that killed her, The Times found, was fired by an Israeli sniper into a crowd that included -coated medics in plain view. A detailed reconstruction, stitched together from hundreds of crowd-sourced videos and photographs, shows that neither the medics nor anyone around them posed any apparent threat of violence to Israeli personnel," it said. "Though Israel later admitted her killing was unintentional, the shooting appears to have been reckless at best, and possibly a war crime, for which no one has yet been punished," the report added. According to The Times, the bullet that killed Najjar also injured two other medics. Following an initial investigation, the military confirmed that shots had been fired in the area around the time that Najjar was killed, but said that no live fire was intentionally aimed at the medic. "During the incident, a limited number of bullets were fired and no gunfire was directly or intentionally fired at her," the army said in a statement. A campaign volunteer for a Chicago City Council hopeful was shot while recording himself canvassing on Facebook Live, police and the candidate said. The victim - identified by the candidate as Maxwell Little - was shot in the leg by a man wearing a red mask at about 1:46 p.m in the West Englewood neighborhood on the city's south side, Chicago police said Monday. Little, 32, was recording himself on Facebook Live talking about his support for candidate Joseph Williams when gunfire erupted, according to Williams. The alleged shooter then ran away, police said, and there was no immediate arrest. Little was treated at Little Company of Mary Hospital and released. "We're out here this evening, knocking on doors in the 15th Ward for my man Joseph Williams, out here canvassing, knocking on doors, letting people know who he is and his platform. If you live in the 15th ward, support Joseph Williams," Maxwell said just before gunshots rang out and the video cut out. At some point after the shooting, Little posted on Facebook: "Whoever tried to kill me failed. My political views will not change no matter what." Williams told NBC News that he, Little and about a dozen other volunteers were out campaigning in the neighborhood when the attack unfolded. The candidate said he was about two doors away when Little was shot, but didn't get a good look at the shooter. "No one had a chance to see the shooter, that's how fast it happened," Williams said. "If a shooter is a wearing a red mask, that sounds like it was planned." Williams did not speculate on who could be behind the attack. A police spokeswoman on Monday declined to say whether detectives have determined a motive. The 15th Ward is now represented by Raymond Lopez, who is facing six challengers on the Feb. 26 ballot. "Campaign or not, it is completely unacceptable and unfortunate that someone would feel compelled to shoot at someone simply because they did not recognize him from the community," Lopez said in a statement."This is the same type of mindless gun violence we have seen in other neighborhoods." Touching moment owner rescues his tiny kitten from a drainage pipe

This is the touching moment a man rescued a tiny kitten from a drainage pipe in southern India on Saturday. Bapputti, a cat lover, keeps 10 of these felines in his home near Kollam. He got worried on December 29 when a kitten went missing. He could hear the kitten crying but could not find it. Then, to his astonishment, he found that the sound was coming from the middle of pipe which drained water from his roof. He realised that the kitten had been stuck inside the pipeline for a few hours. Fearing for its life, he worked furiously to cut open the pipe and eventually managed to pull out the poor animal alive. The kitten had gone to play on the roof, entered the drain hole and got stuck in the pipe. Happy that the kitten survived the ordeal, Bapputti is now planning to put a filter on the drain.

Police confront hundreds of illegal street racers in LA

This is the tense moment on Saturday night when Los Angeles and Orange County police officers confronted hundreds of illegal street racers who had blocked roads to perform dangerous stunts. According to the filmer, up to 1000 vehicles and several thousand people gathered for the illegal event, which lasted about six hours and saw drivers pulling stunts in car parks and sections of road which they had blocked off throughout Los Angeles and Orange County. Police attempted to shut down the event but spectators blocked their vehicles and were filmed behaving aggressively towards officers. Several arrests were made, according to the filmer.

Visitors return to Egypt's pyramids after terror attack

Sightseers continued to visit Egypt's Sphinx and Giza pyramids just 24 hours after a terrorist bomb attack on a tourist bus killed four people. It was the first deadly attack against the sector in over a year and came as tourism was still recovering from a sharp fall since the country's 2011 uprising. Three Vietnamese tourists and an Egyptian tour guide died in Friday's attack that took place just 4km from the pyramids. There was no immediate claim from any group but Islamist militants have been known to target tourists in the past. On Saturday morning police in Egypt said f orty militants were killed in three raids in Giza and North Sinai. It's not clear if the move was connected with Friday's terrorist attack but the police did say that 30 militants killed in Giza had been planning a series of attacks against state institutions and tourist sites.

Britain's international trade secretary Liam Fox has said there's a 50/50 chance Brexit will not happen - if the UK parliament votes down Theresa's Mays withdrawal agreement. The leading Brexiteer backs Mays deal and told the Sunday Times newspaper that rejection "would shatter the bond of trust between the electorate and Parliament". The House of Commons is due to have its delayed vote on the agreement in the week beginning January 14th. U.S. president Donald Trump claims substantial progress is being made on trade talks with . The news came in a tweet on Saturday in which he said he had had a long phone call with President Xi Jinping during which they had covered all subjects and many points of dispute. The two nations have been involved in a tit-for-tat trade war for much of the past year involving tariffs on hundreds of billions' worth of dollars on each other's products. The dispute has shaken stock markets throughout the world. The two countries agreed to a three-month ceasefire starting on December first in order to try to negotiate a solution to the problem. China's Moon probe changes Orbit to prepare for Landing; Space, December 2018

's Chang'e-4 probe entered a planned orbit Sunday morning to prepare for the first-ever soft landing on the far side of the moon, the National Space Administration (CNSA) announced. The probe has entered an elliptical lunar orbit with the perilune at about 15 kilometers and the apolune at about 100 kilometers at 08:55, Beijing Time, said CNSA. Since the Chang'e-4 entered the lunar orbit on Dec. 12, the ground control center in Beijing has trimmed the probe's orbit twice, and tested the communication link between the probe and the relay satellite Queqiao, or Magpie Bridge, which is operating in the halo orbit around the second Lagrangian (L2) point of the earth-moon system. The space engineers also checked the imaging instruments and ranging detectors on the probe to prepare for the landing. The control center will choose a proper time to land the probe on the far side of the moon, according to CNSA. The Chang'e-4 probe, including a lander and a rover, was launched by a Long March-3B carrier rocket on Dec. 8 from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest 's Sichuan Province (CCTV)

Sleeping drunk man rescued from burning car

Man in Sochi nearly burned alive in his car-he literally was on the verge of death. CHP happened on the night of 27 December at the Adler-Krasnaya Polyana highway. Young driver fell asleep in the car and apparently didn't notice as she lit up. From the burning cars, his dragged eyewitnesses, with quite strong flame blazed machine and Auto Salon, where the driver was already asleep in the smoke. According to the men who came to the rescue, the driver was intoxicated. Witnesses CHP had to smash the window of improvised means to wake up the driver. And even when he regained consciousness, he did not immediately understand what had happened.

More than a hundred million people are eligible to vote in the poll, which is widely expected to give Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina a third term of office. In a six-second clip making the rounds from Nov. 24's "Picture This," the gangly blue muppet (or is he gold?!) seems to say the swear word that is not "fudge." The result is like a new "Yanny or Laurel"-like debate, except so much better because it involves a profane muppet. Judge for yourself in the video above. You either hear "that a f-ing excellent idea!" or merely "that sounds like an excellent idea." Many users are reporting that what they hear actually changes the more times they listen to the clip. Woman dragged by car after iPhone sale goes wrong

Keysha Raulston was meeting a buyer she had been in contact with online when the sale went horribly wrong. She became suspicious when the suspect failed to enter her work place parking lot. As she approached the car, she began to hand the man the iPhone, but the money she received in return was fake. Not to be ripped off, Raulston demanded for her phone but the suspect drove off, dragging her with him. "You just have to be really careful and especially on social media - just really have to check them out," Raulston said. The suspect slowed down a bit for Raulston to let go. She says she's thankful that she only suffered minor scrapes and bruises. Police are now using surveillance video from the exchange to track down the thief.

The Democratic Republic of Congo picks a successor to President Joseph Kabila

Outgoing President Joseph Kabila has cast his vote in the election to choose his successor as head of the Democratic Republic of Congo. After seventeen years of rule Kabila is not allowed by the constitution to stand again - creating the prospect of the first ever democratic transfer of power in the former Belgian colony. Of the candidates to succeed him, Kabila's own choice, the country's former interior minister, is said to be trailing in opinion polls behind former Exxon Mobil manager Martin Fayulu. The opposition accuses the government of failing to distribute the fruits of economic growth across the 85 million population. It also fears possible vote rigging - three opposition dominated regions have already been barred from the poll, officially because of concerns over ethnic violence and the spread of ebola. Final results are not expected until January the 15th.

Bull shot dead after dislocating leg

A rodeo bull with a dislocated leg has been killed at an event in Gisborne. Video footage shows the bull landing heavily on its rear leg, moments after leaping from behind a gate and throwing off a rodeo rider. As it hobbles to its feet, the bull is clearly unwilling to place weight on its contorted leg. The second animal death this season, the bull's injury is being described as a devastating accident by the NZ Rodeo Cowboys' Association. An injured horse died at the Methven Rodeo in October, after getting tangled in its saddle. Activist group Direct Animal Action, which posted the footage online, said it was fed up with needless deaths. "We've had enough of seeing animals dying for entertainment at rodeos. This situation needs urgent action now," spokesperson Apollo Taito said in a statement. Taito said it took 25 minutes after the bull's injury before gunshots were heard at Thursday's rodeo. Green MP Gareth Hughes posted online saying the bull's death "shows exactly why this barbaric form of entertainment needs to stop". NZ Rodeo Cowboys' Association president Lyal said an on-site vet determined the bull should be euthanised after its leg was dislocated. He was waiting on a report into the decision to kill the bull, and was confident it would meet the standard set in the Animal Welfare Act 1999.

Yellow vest protesters marched on the headquarters of leading French broadcasters on Saturday. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at the offices of television network BFM and state-run France Televisions. Despite waning momentum for the movement, groups continued to turn out in Paris and across France to voice their anger at the policies of French President Emmanuel Macron. Some protesters hurled stones and other objects during skirmishes with riot police who fired tear gas.
