Sheriff's officials say a 23-year-old man was fatally shot by a deputy in Camarillo after he came at the deputy while armed with a knife repeatedly saying, "kill me." It happened shortly before noon Wednesday on Carmen Drive north of Daily Drive. Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters that the incident actually began when the man took a wireless phone from a nearby business and he called 911 to say a crime was about to be committed and he wanted to die. Dean said that a deputy responded and the man came up to the patrol car and tried to open the door. The deputy told the man to back up and when the deputy exited the patrol car the man produced a large knife and came at the deputy repeatedly saying "kill me." Dean said that the deputy backed up several times telling the man to stop and get down on the ground and at one point wanted to use his Taser but the man continued to advance on the deputy and the deputy then used his gun and shot the man several times. The man was taken to the trauma center at Los Robles Medical Center in Thousand Oaks where he died. The deputy suffered some scrapes and bruises in the altercation. The area around Carmen and Daily was shut down while the Major Crimes and Internal Affairs units conducted their investigation. It also impacted the off ramps from the 101 Freeway, but those ramps were opened later and the only closure was Carmen between Daily and Paseo Camarillo. ALL ROAD CLOSURES HAVE BEEN LIFTED.
