Jon Stewart: Why I'm Leaving 'The Daily Show'

Jon Stewart opens up about his decision to leave "The Daily Show" in a new interview with The Guardian, explaining that there was no single moment that led him to quit, so much as the slow realization that it just was not what he wanted to do anymore. "It's not like I thought the show wasn't working any more, or that I didn't know how to do it. It was more, 'Yup, it's working. But I'm not getting the same satisfaction,'" reveals Stewart. He goes on to say, "These things are cyclical. You have moments of dissatisfaction, and then you come out of it and it's OK. But the cycles become longer and maybe more entrenched, and that's when you realize, 'OK, I'm on the back side of it now.'" There were other considerations, too. He wants to spend more time with his family. And he's exhausted by the repetitiveness of skewering politics. Stewart explains, "Honestly, it was a combination of the limitations of my brain and a format that is geared towards following an increasingly redundant process, which is our political process. I was just thinking, 'Are there other ways to skin this cat?'" "And, beyond that, it would be nice to be home when my little elves get home from school, occasionally," he tells the outlet. He says he has no desire to cover the 2016 presidential race: "I'd covered an election four times, and it didn't appear that there was going to be anything wildly different about this one." That said, he realizes that it could be an ideal time for his replacement to hit the ground running. "For the show, you don't want to leave when the cupboard's bare," says Stewart. "So I think it's a better introduction when you have something providing you with assisted fuel, like a presidential campaign. But really, the value of this show is so much deeper than my contribution." He sounds like he's looking forward to not immersing himself in cable news anymore. "Watching these channels all day is incredibly depressing," says Stewart. "I live in a constant state of depression. I think of us as turd miners. I put on my helmet, I go and mine turds, hopefully I don't get turd lung disease." Stewart has not announced the date of his final "Daily Show." He will be replaced by Trevor Noah.

Three reported dead as new footage emerges of illegals being rescued off Greek island of Rhodes

At least three people have drowned after a boat carrying dozens of migrants ran aground off the coast of the Greek Island of Rhodes on Monday morning. 20 April 2015 Greek coast guards confirmed that they had retrieved three dead bodies, as footage emerged showing migrants clinging to the floating wreckage of the damaged boat. In one clip from video footage published on local Greek news website Rodiaki, a young child is seen being pulled onto the rocks by coast guards. Others can be seen attempting to swim to the shore as Greek coast guards and passers-by jump into the water to rescue the migrants, many of which were not wearing life jackets. A Greek coast guard official confirmed the deaths, saying: "We have recovered three bodies so far - that of a man, a woman and a child. The search-and-rescue operation continues." So far 80 people are said to have been rescued from the wreckage, with 23 of those currently receiving treatment at hospital. The nationalities of those that were rescued is not yet known. The footage on Monday comes in the wake of this weekend's tragedy in the Mediterranean, which saw a smuggler's boat crammed with hundreds of migrants capsize on Saturday night. According to survivors, there could have been up to 950 people aboard the boat, with many believed to have been locked in the vessel's hold as it sunk. So far only 28 survivors have been found, with the Italian Coast Guard stepping up its rescue efforts. source

Arab stabbed in central Israel, Jewish attacker found and arrested

Arab (Israeli) worker lightly wounded in attack claims stabber with Russian accent who called - Death to Arabs, was motivated by hatred. An Arab worker was stabbed in Herzliya, suburb town of Tel-Aviv, on Monday. The resident of northern Israel sustained light wounds. He told detectives that the man who attacked him - who had a Russian accent - yelled "Death to Arabs!" before stabbing him and fleeing. A Magen David Adom emergency team was deployed to the scene and treated the victim; he was evacuated to a near by hospital. Police units located,arrested the suspect in the stabbing. Mayor Moshe Fadlon condemned the crime: "We will not tolerate violent attacks on any person." He promised to reinforce police patrols using a new unit which he founded. Last week, Shalom Cherky was killed in Jerusalem when an Arab from east Jerusalem crashed his vehicle into Cherky and another woman at a bus station on the French Hill.

China-Russia Cooperation is Changing World Order - Chinese Media

China's policy of openness and Russia's East course are closely interconnected, with both countries having a lot in common and enjoying a historic opportunity for the further development of their bilateral relations, the China Times wrote. Russian-Chinese relations underwent the most rapid development among three groups of partners (China-Russia, China-South Korea, Japan-India). The expansion of the cooperation between both countries was accelerated by the Ukrainian crisis and Western sanctions and is gradually becoming a threat to US domination, the newspaper wrote. Speaking to China National Radio on Sunday, Renmin University Professor Jin Canrong explained Russia and China's common positions regarding the Second World War, noting that the Chinese leadership's participation in May's victory celebrations in Moscow signifies the high level of Russian-Chinese relations. Russia and China expanded their ties in the political, military, energy, investment, humanitarian and technical fields. At the moment, the trade volume between the two countries amounts to $ 100 billion and is expected to double in the next five years. In May, leaders of 26 countries, including China, India, Vietnam, North Korea and Mongolia will attend the Victory Day parade in Moscow. Additionally, Russia's decision to join the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank may reinforce the idea that Russian President Vladimir Putin is planning to strengthen cooperation with these very states. Russia and China have already reached a consensus regarding the supply of Russian Su-35 fighters. The leaders of both countries are expected to declare their plans to hold joint naval exercises in the Black Sea during the next negotiations. According to the newspaper, this means that Moscow and Beijing are taking a strategic position to confront the US in a "new era of the cold war."

EU politicians to meet on Mediterranean drownings

EU foreign ministers will be joined Monday by their interior minister colleagues to discuss the latest migrant disaster in the Mediterranean which may have cost 700 lives, an EU official said. 20 Apr 2015 The foreign ministers were originally due to meet on their own but the agenda had to be changed after the loss of a ship carrying more than 700 people sparked calls for immediate action, a European Council spokeswoman said. The foreign and interior ministers will meet at 1pm GMT, the spokeswoman said, with EU Home Affairs Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos also attending as the 28 member states try to find a solution to the growing tide of humanity washing up on its southern shores. The foreign ministers had been due to discuss the situation in war-torn Libya, now a major transit point for people from all over Africa and the Middle East trying to get to Europe. Exploited by ruthless people smugglers, thousands take to the sea in rickety boats at the mercy of the elements and prone to capsize. Italy, which has borne the brunt of the latest exodus, said only 28 people survived the latest shipwreck off Libya. "It seems we are looking at the worst massacre ever seen in the Mediterranean," said Carlotta Sami, spokeswoman for the UN refugee agency UNHCR. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Europe risked "damaging our credibility if we are not able to prevent these tragic situations which are happening every day." As well as Monday's meeting, EU president Donald Tusk was considering holding a special summit on the crisis but no date has been fixed. The latest disaster comes after a week in which two other migrant shipwrecks left an estimated 450 people dead. Some 11,000 migrants have been rescued since the middle of last week and current trends suggest last year's total of 170,000 landing in Italy is likely to be exceeded in 2015. The issue of who handles the migrants - for asylum or repatriation - is hugely sensitive, with Italy complaining its EU partners are not doing enough. It scaled back its Mare Nostrum search-and-rescue operation at the end of last year in protest at the rising cost and it was replaced by a smaller EU-led mission called Triton. source
