Driver says Fort Myers police stopped, cuffed him for no reason

Fort Myers police said the actions of several people in a car officers stopped along Verona Street on Friday night led to an officer following one person into a private residence and issuing a traffic citation. The car driver, Keenan Carter, 31, of Georgia, didn't see it that way, however. The FMPD's Group Violence Intervention Unit reported it tried to make a traffic stop for a minor violation mid-block on Verona Street just off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard shortly before midnight Friday. The stop began at 11:14 p.m. with emergency lights being activated and the vehicle pulled into a residential driveway along Verona Street, a news release from Fort Myers police stated Saturday. Right after the vehicle stopped, one of the four occupants, a rear passenger, fled the scene on foot and was not found, police said. A second passenger began walking toward a residence. Police said a uniformed officer gave loud, clear verbal commands to stop, but with no result. After numerous commands to comply, an officer followed the passenger into the front doorway of the residence and escorted the subject back out to the investigation. The officer's actions fall under "fresh pursuit," said Fort Myers police public information officer Kristin Capuzzi. The subject who did not comply with lawful orders was issued a court date, police said. Additionally, a firearm was found in the vehicle and taken for safekeeping until it is claimed by the owner. Carter claimed ownership of the firearm, but Fort Myers police said they could not confirm his claim yet. He said the weapon was purchased in Georgia. Capuzzi said that what should have been a simple encounter with possibly just a verbal warning issued became more due to noncompliance. This incident was not as described or depicted on social media, the news release concluded. A spokesman for the police released the officer's bodycam video Saturday evening.
