Welfare state should not pay for luxury lifestyle of Titina Nzolameso

Congolese immigrant Titina Nzolameso knows no shame. Britain gave her asylum and citizenship, treated her HIV and diabetes and educated her children. Apr 3, 2015 source link She was given all manner of benefits and provided with accommodation in central London. When she fell behind on her rent Westminster Council offered her a house in Milton Keynes but she kicked up a fuss, called in the lawyers (surprise, surprise, taxpayers paid for that too) and took the council to court. Does Ms Nzolameso think she would have had any of these advantages in her native Congo? Is she grateful for all that her adoptive home has done for her? Of course not. She has fallen into the mentality of long-term benefit claimants: that the government owes them a comfortable living. In siding with her complaint yesterday the Supreme Court has set a dangerous precedent. Their decision risks undermining the strength of the benefit cap and opening up the Government to bullying from whingeing petitioners who portray every one of their unfulfilled wishes as a heinous abuse of their human rights. There are plenty of hard-working people who would love to live in central London but find that the cost of housing there is simply too high. This is a fact of life they have to live with. People on benefits should have to live with it too. The welfare state is not a crutch to help maintain a luxury lifestyle. It is a last-ditch resort for those in trouble. The Supreme Court would do well to remember that.
